Zounthids dissapearing

Hey guys,

I have some zoos that are doing great and other simply disappearing. No predetors or snails. They are always fully opened.

Any ideas?

Do you have any angels or tangs in the tank? The polyps are just disappearing over night?

I would say predation.
Some fishes can be in the system for months or even years without touching the polyps. One day they try and they like them.
Try watch your fishes at night.
Also, some snails/nudis can be introduced and attack only at night.
GAC are not so good for zoas.

I do have one african pygmy angel that doesnt seem to bother anything. Zoos are dissapeaing slowly not overnight. I look at them all the time to see if there is any predetor but none that I can find. Should I reduce the amount of GAC as I have increased it a little for the past few months.

Thanks for the help guys

I run GAC (ROX) and GFO in my tank and have never seen any detrimental effects.

I had problems with GAC many times before. It happens after a while. My goal was to try to keep the water as clear as possible. When I stopped using GAC, I found they reproduced more often and the colors were more intense with the same light and set up. Also, they didn't close for long period of times, like before. I do 5 to 10% weekly water changes, instead. Some times I skip one or 2 weeks, without problems.
I don't like GFO either. regular partial water changes are the best to keep Alk and clean water.

If you are happy with the GAC and the GFO there is no need to change then.

No problem.
That's it! Watch the angel at night. Perhaps even during the day.
Maybe would be a really good thing to remove the angel for a week or so.
Depending on the damage it did to the colony you will notice the polyps opening very soon.
They stay in the system for a while without touching the polyps and one day...
Keep an eye on him!
Doesn't hurt to remove the fish for a while.
You could miss lots of nice zoas to him in a very short period of time.

had a couple of sundial snails years back, they ate almost all my zoos. took me a while to find them, and they were just having a smorgeshborg. They were small, with a black and white checkerboard pattern on their shells. maybe look for something like that.

There are the white ones also. Same type of shell, but white.

if not fish, then possibly a different pest. You may not see them with a mag glass. Try to pull a piece of zoa rock and use a microscope. I had abttled this entire winter with some microscopic pests. Worms and bugs. Kill em all
