Here are a few pics of my nanos, the first is my 23 fbh sps:

Im pretty sure I have a potassium deficiency going on right now in this tank (monti's are cluing me in) and haven't had the dough to go buy the T&P A&K supplement...

<br><br> Here is my pico, which was in my office originally, it has a 70w metal halide "luminarc" style light on it, the corals were a bit mad at me when I took this because I had just topped off. <center><br><br> <img src="http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/allienimy/desktop-pico.jpg"><br><br><center>I have found the light to be too strong for acans and blastos, acans lose color and blastos just disappear... the ricordia, polyps and leathers couldn't be happier though. nope, just a penguin bio-wheel without the biowheel, I seem to grow this red macro algea in the tank all over the place so I use that for nutrient export (plus large water changes), I periodically run a small cutting of a polyfilter in it but thats about it, it mostly just circulates the water
 
I really like it! There are some really cool nanos over here on RC, I had no idea. Could you please describe your SPS nano setup to me, I am interested in moving my nano in that direction. Also if you would be so gracious as to share with me what it is that you find aesthetically pleasing about SPS and what qualities one should look for in a quality SPS? I have been bitten by the SPS bug now that I have a tank I think I can support them, but I know very little about them. Tanks like yours make me bored with my softie collection, and I feel I am ready to take that next step.
 
Its a 23 gallon Flat Back Hex, it was built to be uniquarium (overflow with skimmer in back) I removed the skimmer and filled the void with chaeto and put a small power compact light on it to grow the macro. There is a hang on back skimmer that I actually got from isthisnametaken? its a cpr backpack skimmer, The lighting is a 400 watt 20k metal halide with 2 32 watt dual actinic pc's... you don't need that much light.

This whole set up was supposed to be a holding tank only for a bigger one which I haven't had the scratch yet to setup

if you have your dual 70 watts you could grow most montis and more hearty acros like acropora nana or acropora cerealis, green slimer's (acropora yongei) etc... just probably up the flow, I use 2 modded maxijets, and that seems to work fine along with a Y return from a mag 5. I don't alternate flow, its seems to randomize itself in the small space.

with sps, i just look for color and *ahem* a good deal. :) Just look for pests on all sps, they can be a real night mare, if you go to the sps forum you can view pictures of everything you would want to look out for which I have battled everysingle one of'em...
red bugs, montipora eating nudi's, acro eating flatworms, and even zoa eating nudi's...
 
Thanks for the info. Feel free to respond on my thread if you want I don't mean to try to hijack your thread. :) I have a 400W MH sitting in a box in my closet, I just need a new bulb, (I would go with the 20k also), I was thinking if the 2x 70W were not working out that I could throw that on there instead and put my worries to rest.

I have a closed loop on the display that is running 480gph - head loss, and my return from the sump is also adding flow up there, it has the same pump but most of the flow is recirculated back into the sump, although I could change this if necessary.

When you say look for color does that mean a color I like, or something else like (I am making these ex up:) brown is bad, white is bleached, etc...
 
I don't know how you do it but I've never seen anyone as good with SPS as you... especially in such a small tank. Some of those colonies were like microscopic frags last time I saw your tank. We've been experimenting in my little bros tank and just can't get em to stay alive... well exept the ugliest monti in the world... of course that is growing like a weed. I give you props!

I was just looking some old pics of the 4 gallon. I miss that little tank. Glad to see the legacy is still living on though ;)

Thanks! I appreciate all the compliments... I'm a total nerd about my tanks they are my therapy after a long day I enjoy taking measurements of the parameters and making adjustments :)
 
Those tanks look awesome. I never knew nanos could look like that. How large is the hippo tang in the first picture? Just curious because I thought they couldn't be in tanks less than 100g
 
Reefer Ryan- The hippo is small, again this tank is not supposed to be, it was originally just a holding cell for a larger tank... so I don't recommend putting hippos in small quarters, this one is a little larger than the size of a golf ball, he was a rescue from petco. The manager there was complaining about how he couldn't control his salinity when he was topping off with SW... My girlfriend made me take this one home to save him...

hahnmeister- I will look for the info I was reading about potassium in regards to corals, I believe its ideal range is 380ppm and mine is no where near that, I have to do large water changes with T&P to regulate it.

Here are a couple of links: I might have been reading some of the information wrong now that I'm seeing that the TP A&K is a variety of elements as far as supplementation, I assumed the K stood for Potassium on the periodic table of elements :) ... but nonetheless on the SPS forum there has been more and more jibba jabber about montis, thier color and health and potassium.

Calvin415- You know I saw a phos reactor that as a bi-product lowered alk in the first chamber and then the second chamber was filled with CA media, it essentially operated as a nana CA reactor. It was an english product you might be able to find it online... I don't remember the name though unfortunately.
 
demeyer2- I add a lot of calcium! I also buffer accordingly to keep my alk in the 9-12 dkh range... I have to watch my magnesium because of how quickly its used up because that affects my ph and my ability to keep high CA levels, so I do regular water changes with a mixture of half Seachem salt (high MG & CA) and half Tropic marin for all the other essential supplement factors.
