1/2 set up, where to go from here?

I have 9 lbs LR(will get more when money permits), 7 lbs base, and about 50 lbs of volcanic( I think, it will be removed with the addition of LR and base), with 2 damsels, and 5 blue legged hermits in a 60g long72x12x17. It's been running for a month. Should I remove my fluval 404 before or after I get more LR. It has a sponge, activated charcoal, and ceramic bio-media. When I get enough LR, it's gone. Should I dico it sooner(I keep hearing bad things about them, but I don't have enough LR) rather than later? Or is it helping me right now. I just want to do it right , without killing anything, and the books don't answer this one.

The cannister filter isn't ideal but it will provide biological filtration. It won't hurt anything and may well help to run it until you have all of the rock.

Be careful in adding the subsequent rock. If you can invest an extra few bucks for a rubbermaid container (trash can, storage box...whatever) and an extra powerhead you should probably try to cure the new rock thoroughly before adding it to the tank. Make sure that it doesn't have a die-off that produces an ammonia/nitrite spike in your tank. If you are trying to manage this on a budget consider buying more base rock now instead of live rock later...it will all end up "live" after it is in your tank a few months and cost you much, much less.

Don't add any more fish or inverts (other than possibly some snails) until you have everything ready to go. I know it's tough to wait, but at only a month you are already on the edge. (The damsels will be fine...)

Got my 20g up and running for water changes, and a rubbermaid to cure LR. I don't plan on adding anything but base rock for a while, and a couple snails to clear the algae. And if it'll all be LR eventually... why bother with the expensive stuff.

Waiting is the easy part(I like my damsels, go figure). Getting the money out of the wife, now THATs hard.
Thanks !
