1 5/8" hole vs 1 3/4" hole (bulkhead leak)

Take a peek and see just how big the gasket is and what it covers.

Then it depends on your comfort level.

If I was uncomfortable, I'd get creative with plexiglass, a drill and some silicone. Creating the equivalent of a fender washer for the bulkhead should be a piece of cake.

Drill it out, silicone it to the hole, throw on the fitting (somewhat loosely), let it dry, tighen it, then leak test.

And the best part is if you screw it up you can just scrape it off and try again.

I've heard of worse problems...

;)

I would just buy the correct size. Marinedepot has them for 6-8 bucks depending on what threading you need.

Hey Ken,

I am going to order new 1" slip bulkheads and ball valves from SAVKO. I am going to try the PVC bulkheads instead of the plastic ABS that I got from CustomAquatics. I wanted to get the schedule 80, but my holes are not big enough (1 3/4 vs. 1 7/8). I am also getting single union ball valves since they are suppose to be easier to open and close.

I am also leaning towards spa-flex instead of flexible vinyl due to kinking issues.

Regards,

Joseph

P.S.

Ken, have you moved to your new house yet?

Hey Joseph, good call on going with spa-flex. Let me know how the bulkheads work for you.

I don't want to jinx things but I may be getting that new house any day now. If that works out, giant in-wall tank here I come!!!

try the hayward or spears bulkheads... i think they come bigger right? they'll def cost more though. just shop around and i'm sure you'll find what you're looking for

i just drilled my hole for my 2-1/2" bullhead. i used a 2-3/4" drill bit. the OD of my bulkhead was 2-7/8". i just used a round file and got it perfect. i also drilled 8- 1-3/4" holes for my 1-1/2" bulkheads. no problems at all.

i also cut all my bulkheads (threaded) and saved about 3" of space on the back of my tank. when i get pics i'll post.

How thick is your acrylic tank? Mine is 3/4" so I am not that confident about drilling it. I have drilled other tanks before as well. Thanks.
