depends on the size of the tank. i have two tanks(14g and 65g) and have a pair in each. i like how they relate with each other. if it is a small tank, it depends on the bioload. I would only do 2 fish in my 14g.
that is what should happen if you buy them small enough. one would become the bigger female and the other one would stay male. there might be some fighting but they get over it.
If you're considering it, I would go ahead and do two. I went with one in each of my tanks, and now we are trying to add another to each. The interaction of the two is fun to watch, and it's so much easier when they go in together!
