so exciting!! when I shine the spotlight I can see about 15 little ones darting about :-))

now is the hard part. If anyone has raised yellow clown goby's what food did you use for the fry? I bought rotifer's to prepare for them...and it seems too large a food source so I began using my Kent microvert [ I know this is for my anemone but I thought a liquid nutrient in the first few days would be good ]

also, I read the fry take up to 40 days to grow. Does anyone know how much and how often I should feed them?

I was lucky to see them hatch and transferred them to a filter sock I had made in time. I am fortunate the sock is black so when I shine my light I see the little dots darting about :-))

this is so exciting! I hope I am able to grow a few.

and, Mom seems to be pregnant again. Could this be true? so soon...

THANK you!! for any help you can give me.

I'd try the smaller S-strain rotifers for them. General rule of thumb for minimum food density is to keep enough rotifers in the tanks such that the larval fish do not need to swim more than 1.5 body lengths without bumping into a rot at any time.

Thank you! for your post.

Thank you! for your post.

I will try that with the next batch. Yes, Mom was pregnant. She laid another nest in the same place as before. I find it strange that she is able to lay eggs then the next week lay another batch of eggs.

The babies were doing well. Not sure what happened on day 2? In the morning the were darting about. I fed them some rotifer's [ not as much as you describe ] guess I need to place more food. I was trying to keep their area as clean as possible since they are so small I could not do too much. Then in the afternoon All but one is semi- alive [ not sure if he/she will make it :( ].

I am not sure how I feel about ALL these babies :) I am excited but it is also much work!!

update - I read the fry generally last 3 - 5 days before they consume their energy, then die. Mine lasted 2 days...so maybe they were not as strong?
Also, it seems breeders feed the fry live rotifero's every 6 hours. I was feeding the larvae Hikari frozen rotifero's 3X's a day. The package does not say if these are S- strain or L-strain rotifero's. Does anyone know how to grow rotifero's? My local fish store does not have live ones. Must research some more.
I changed the filter sock to have more flow. Hopefully, I can get the next batch to eat. The new Goby's are due to hatch Weds., October 17, 2012. Let's see what happens.

It's not really unusual to have high fry mortality in the first day or two, especially if not eating. Didn't realize you were using frozen rots. They don't tend to work very well for rearing fry...the fry cue on the movement of live food. There is sticky thread at the top of the breeding forum on live foods. Lots of good info on culturing rots, phytoplankton and other larval foods. I work on getting a good rot culture going before making the next attempt at larval rearing. Those Gobies will keep breeding, so you'll get plenty of chances ;) Oh yeah, it's lots of work, but it's also lots of fun :)

Thanks! I will check the live food forums. Yes, I need to get a good food source.

And, you're right, this is FUN! :-)
