10 Gallon Nano

So there was no way I could completely get out of the hobby so I took a couple things from my main tank and small tank and set up a little 10 gallon rimless ( tore the trimming off ). I was going to put an LED light on it but the one I had was kind of puny so I think I'm just going to use the day light.

I have a korala 850 in it and have it setup so its behind the rock and doing a loop around the tank so all debris comes back and hits live rock. Also planning to dig the rest of the live rock out of the sumps and use this to make a little island on right side that hopefully I can block off some flow and have it a little calmer with algae and mangroves. Will be cooled with AC and Fan.

Live stock will be 1 yellow tail damsel and 1 peppermint shrimp. If it is a success I'll add probably some more inverts or something like that.

Thats the plan anyway... Never done a nano, or one thats like this so let me know if ya have an idea what kind of algae i should use or any other useful info to get around using traditional filtration.

Oh by the way I'm Nate, I've been cruising the forums for awhile... but now just starting to get socially involved ha.

So I took some rocks and algae out of my sump and now this is what it looks like in the day with sun hitting it, it has its own big fan blowing on it hopefully i can keep temp down with this AZ sun.

Right now it only has some green nuclear palys

I thought I picked rock with no aiptasia but.... i found some little guys so looks like first live stock addition is going to be some sort of shrimp or something to take care of these before it gets out of control.

looks awesome!!! great start!!! is that a standard 10 gal form like petsmart that you took the top bracing off to make rimless?

yeah just standard 10 i ripped top off of haha

I just put 3 mangroves and 3 hermit crabs in it. Will update pictures whenever I decide what fish I want in it. I was thinking about Blue Spot Jawfish... but is expensive would suck if he jumped. Only going to be 1 fish so really want to get one with a lot of personality that is well suited to a 10 gallon that might not be the most stable tank on the planet.

Cool little tank!
I have a young 1.75" Flame Angle in my 8g Biocube with 2 Fire Shrimp, a Zebra Crab and a few small snails. There is also a large LR and a lot of macro algae, a small Koralia PH and I use the stock filtration system with Chemi-Pure Elite and a small Eheim canister filter. Weekly, I do 10% water change and clean the Eheim pads.

The angle swims throughout all the macro and behind the LR, he may out grow it in time, but for now he's happy and content being the only fish. He is also active and adds life to the tank.

Nice, I think I'm definitely going to get a couple cool shrimp. But as for the fish I want him to be a perm resident for awhile. I've gone through a couple fish and its not fun catching them when ya gotta get them out of tank... even in a 10 gallon i don't even want to try that anymore ha.

The only thing I have on this for filtration is LR some micro algae... its in picture not sure what its called, and I just put in those 3 mangrove trees, hopefully the sand will help a bit too, its established sand as well as all the rock. Also I'm running MB7 and vodka.

I think I'm going to do a biweekly water change or something. I really want to make it low maintenance as possible, I'm hoping that the bacteria dosing will be the main thing to help with this.

If you get shrimp, you may not want Fire Shrimp as I rarely see them - very nocturnal!
Regular water changes and one of those Ammonia alert badges they sell at Petsmart and you should be good.
My little 8g is my most constantly healthy and balanced tank I have, but I do know that when thinks go wrong in little tanks, they go bad very quickly!
If you are close to AJ, I could give you a little clump of Dragons Breath macro algae??

Hi Nate. All the fish made it home yesterday and doing great. Thanks. Let me know when you catch that Blenny.

Your 10 gallon looking nice.

Awesome man hope they are happy! Yeah he has come out, he was hiding in that one rock, now he jumps back in there everytime he sees me haha. But we will get him!

bugs I wish but you are on the other side the planet compared to me haha , I'm up at 91st and Tbird I gotta fix that address thing... thought i did already
I'm not too worried about crashing this... im going to try to keep it pretty low on nutrients and everything came from established system so all should be well
and thnx for compliment ;D

Hmmm I'd say get a Orange spotted FileFish!!!!! but than u'd have to give it some acros. Or put a mandarin in there but my mandarin is cryptic and i only see him hunting for food all day long. Hmmm..... A cool fish that is active, stays small and swims around the tank...... You could get a pseudochromis! I just picked up a neon dottyback aquacultured from ORA to replace my Black Capped Basslet that I think is dead i haven't seen the fish in 4 weeks but if he isn't there will be a battle royal.... Gramma vs Pseudochromis!!! Who will win.... if the black caps alive he will cause the neon dottyback is like 1.5" the black capped was 3"

I have a Borbonius in my 10gal QT Tank!

Oh and is the tank still stable without the top bracing??????

I love the idea for the file fish he is pretty cool looking. However hard to keep as well as the mandarin would just devastate any copepod population in a day and they are stilll recommended to be in 30 gallon cuz of this. A lot of the fish that you think could go in a 10 gallon seem to be rated 30 gallon fish. Found a neon goby that is rated 10, but they don't look too exciting haha.

Yeah tank is stable without bracing, it still has bottom bracing on it, although I was playing some bass with it when the tank was empty haha ( plucking the glass walls ). I just gotta watch roots on mangrovesand make sure they don't punch through the cracks where edges are glued.

Right now my temperature is not stable at all. It fluctuates from 75 at night to 80 at day time... I was trying to just do this with an open window but I might go ahead and buy a decent light for it... then i can just keep window closed and this would elminate most heat then prolly be 78 all day or so.... after all I do want to put some corals in this thing and can't really see all the colors without lighting. I wish someone could just make me one of these haha http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=261164 cuz I really don't want to build it myself. But was thinking of an LED for this thing just don't want to spend more than 100 bucks on it cuz prolly going to buy a 100 dollar fish.

So thought I'd drop a pic by, I'm going to take another when the sun is actually hitting it.

I haven't water changed this since I set it up 2 months ago...

Its basically just ran off the sun and I have a fan on it.

Everything seems to be happy, tons of copepods, bristleworms (one of them are like 18" or so), and have a peppermint shrimp, along with 2 nassarius snails, and 3 hermit crabs. One day ill get a fish for it if I can ever sell my 90 gallon set up.

I lowered the water level so my mangrove trees can reach the waters surface, one of them died... another doesn't seem to be doing well but is still green, and the last one is growing like a weed supplement with an small led bulb when sun is no longer hitting the tank. Algae growing great.

Here is how my nano is looking, picked up a light that is actually for a 45(est) gallon shallow ( 36x24x12 ) to start a SPS tank don't have the money for that though so put it on nano. Going to start growing coral in this till I have the funds to start up the shallow tank. Also plan to get a pair of clowns for it.

Picked up pair of Snowflake clowns.

Picked up a Blenny too but lost him, got them from Discount Aquariums... I try not to get their livestock considering their tank conditions. Great for equipment though.

Thanks, they seem to be happy, they will be even happier when I get that 45 up.

Just switched to Red Sea Pro salt so hopefully will see some positive changes in the coral soon. They are open, but not thrilled. Light might be too bright but going to see if there is any improvement if not I'll start moving them. Oh, still need picture of them... I will do that soonish...

Doh! Lost my 2 year old Peppermint Shrimp that came over from my 90 Gal Reef :( A rock must of fell on him or something when I was making adjustments he was awesome :( RIP Shrimpy
