100/100/100 breeding challenge

So I'm thinking with all the novice breeders out there it would be interesting to try and make a simple and cost effective template that people new to breeding could follow to have a little fun without breaking the bank. I know that those of us who get really in to this part of the hobby end up spending thousands of dollars, but I think at least one of us can come up with a way to get a single hatch of the common Occs to 3/4" for under $100.

What I propose is a friendly competition to see who can get 100 fry from a single clutch to the 100 day mark for less than $100. This budget would include all equipment and food. I would propose that electricity and starter cultures of rots and phyto should be excluded. Hopefully anyone out there interested will be able to find a fellow hobbyist to hook them up with the cultures, and the electricity should be nominal a single little set up.

If anyone's interested feel free to post ideas and any guidlines you think should be included. I'm working under the assumption that this challenge would be designed to benefit hobbyists looking for a family friendly approach to raising a single clutch, and therefore they would likely need to purchase all the equipment from scratch. Not necessarily new as there's always stuff available on craigslist, but all of it, right down to the rigid airline and tiny tank vacs people like us have to either buy or build.

I'm going to start my search tonight and see if I can come up with the basic equipment for under $30. I'll be looking for a 20g or better yet a 29g with a hood, light, heater, airpump, HOB all included. May take a little while, but I know I can find a setup for that kind of money. Then I'll be looking at buying salt for the tank and the cultures. Next a second air pump and....and....and... we all know where this is going!

Anyone interested????

Very cool idea here. Lately I have been really wanting to try my hand at raising a batch of my occ's fry. I do not want to raise every clutch but just wanted to try it once or twice. I guess I will have to follow this thread to get more advice.

Sounds like it would be fun.

Isn't amazing how fast, the and..and..and...works out? $5 turns into $10 then turns into $50, etc...

and all you thought you needed was a piece of PVC. =)

Now the question is, broodstock included in this $100? =)

I actually have a pair of clowns in my DT that have started showing mating behavior in the last few weeks...so maybe a fun time to do this, although I still think I would be tempted to toss them in my setup. One oc and one black.

I am brand new to clowns so I doubt I could do any of the 100s =P

Depending on scrounging abilities, sometimes you can come up with small tanks (20 and smaller) and lights for next to nothing or even nothing. This is usually scratched up ugly used stuff...but your rearing fish, not setting up a display tank. If you need to actually go buy stuff, rubbermaid storage containers and their ilk make for good rearing tanks....cheap ;) Airline, small air pumps, and sponge filters are cheap. Shop lights (for algae culture) can often be had for about $10 from the likes of HD or Lowes, even with the cheap bulbs that are fine for algae culture. Culture bottles can be 2L soda bottles, after you drink the soda ;) For low level, a small bottle of algae food such as the micro grow from Florida Aqua Farms is about $10, for about $25 you could get a mass pack of Guillards and mix up enough stock for several thousand gallons of algae culture :D Brine shrimp cysts are going to be the most expensive part ;)
