"When in doubt, leave it out"

If you're really struggling to reassure yourself whether it's safe our not, why risk it? Just get some silicone that is for aquarium use.

Lowes, and other hardware stores I'm sure, carry aquarium silicone. In my case I looked at every single tube of silicone in the caulking section of Lowes, and it seemed every one had "Not suitable for aquarium use" written somewhere in fine print. After giving up and planning to just order some, I strolled around the store, stumbling into the adhesive/glue section....this is where they keep the aquarium silicone at Lowes. *$#@ers! Why they keep the aquarium silicone with the adhesives instead of the silicone I don't know.

good point. dome hepot is the samr way. note. "GE's atvantage" is 100% silicone. no bio anything. it has the above ingredients i mentioned in the earlier post.. forgot where i purchased it...

The "100%" on the label is meaningless...

Ensure that the label does not indicate any type of anti-fungal or anti-bacterial agents, bioseal, bioguard etc.

It sounds like you are describing "GE Silicone II" which now in ALL cases has the fungicide in it. The silicone II formulation gives off the ammonia and methanol odor, where the silicone I gives off a vinegar smell.

BOTH GE I and GE II say "100% Silicone" even though the type II has the anti-fungal stuff in it.

It may be an "old" tube of GE II that was made before the fungicides were added. But Silicone has a fairly short shelf life, so the chances of getting the "old stuff" are starting to dwindle.

I just glued the dividing pieces of my sump/refugium yesterday. The silicone i used smelled like vinegar. It says 100% silicone on it. The vinegar smelling stuff is safe, right?

Bean,
I bought a tube of DAP 100% silicone the other day. It says "safe for food contact" but not "for continuous submersion". Standing in the aisle at Menards I called DAP'S customer service line. The CSR informed me if their product was used under water it would lose it's adherance after "a couple weeks" and that I should get their aquarium sealant which has a different formula.

I smell BS what do you think? I'm pretty sure the older DAP silicone didn't have the "submersion" statement and I have used it in the past, though nothing where I could tell if it leaked or not.

What are you thoughts?

Tim

It is hard to tell... smells like BS to me also. There are certainly different formulations of 100% silicone sealant... I would suggest a look at the MSDS to see what is in it and compare that with the others.

'Ethyl Triacetoxysilane as acetic Acid is what makes it smell that way. this is appropiate to use if these is no verbage about bioseal, biogard, for bathrooms etc...
