100% Water Change?

240-Reefer

New member
Well it's gettin close to go time. I have to move a 400 gallon system and besides the fact I'll be looking for a few hands I need some input on how to go about it. At this point I have a 240 (8x2x2) that the live stock is in and in addition to that I have a 135, 80, 46 and my 150 sump/fung. I have 4) 250w MH. in this setup I have about 50 species of coral and about 16 fish. Moving out of this house is more of a task due to being in the basement. The new house which is 15 minuets away is pretty easy due to the fact it's going in the garage. I can get a box truck to move it all in one shot. I have about two weeks to make the move. I have a couple very knowable reefers in mo local club advising me to do a 100% water change. I was also thinking all nes sand.

Ideas? Input? Fears? Anything else?

no I would NOT do a 100% water change or new sand because you will be re-doing your cycle all over and have to have your livestock out of the tank for a while, you pretty much want to leave as much untouched durring the move as possible, to avoid a crash.

You might want to put all the sand in buckets with some water and put them in the car

Save all the water in drum and when you get to ur new house, dump the sand and water back in. Less stress for the corals and fish. I think 100% new water and sand would be a shock to your livestock

I think as long as you keep your rocks submerged, you probably won't have to re-cycle them. But your sand is gonna be a nightmare. You are gonna have to re-seed and restart a cycle with that if you use the old sand. If you go new (or BB) it probably won't be so bad!

I'm sure the people you have helping you on HVReefs will figure out ways to store/move the rock and some of the old sand to seed. PM if you need an extra hand!

Yes, it is possible. Don't use the old sand though as it's full of nasty stuff and you don't want it to be released. If you have alot of live rock it will hold enough denitrifying bacteria to recolonise the water column. Just remember that adding the livestock will be like adding a new fish. Be careful to acclimatise slowly. If you can save half the water that would be even better and less of a shock for teh animals.

Thanks for the replys guys, but I think I'm more confused now.

snulma - The Guys here @ HVreef are great and I have an overwhelming amount of support, I think were all set as far as help, thanks a ton.

Nexdog - That was my thought all that nasty stuff in there, the last thing I want to do is stir it up.
