Last night I posted all the close up's I have of the corals and fish. They are a bit fuzzy but it was the best I could do with the camera I have. These can serve as a reference for growth shot comparisons in the future.

I also just reached out to a fellow refer who has a high end camera with a macro lens and knows how to get great camera shots of corals done the right way. If all goes well, future photos will be of a much higher quality.

It is a great tank already and I see there is a lot of potential can happen in your tank. I just realized that you did not use a controller system (DA or Apex), right? Like Mr. Saltwater mentioned in Youtube, it is also my best investment so far for my tank, especial if you plan to have self-maintain tank. Just some of my humble opinion.

BTW, I am not very success with Calcium reactor even I did choose a good quality Schuran JS1 reactor, it did not handle well during my travel time (over 3 weeks) and easy to drip slower or even stuck ;-( Please share how you keep your calcium reactor drip stable. I would like to learn.

My last tank ran an Apex controller that I've since sold but I am a big fan of them. For this system, I'm looking to add a GHL Profilux controller in the near future.


As far as the reactor goes, I use an aquariumplants .com digital controller, which I think really helps. I've seen the same issue with the dripper as you so I keep a good steady flow going out of the dripper to keep it more constant. The dripper hose sits about 2 inches above the water level in the sump and is a steady stream always. If it slows down to the point where it starts to drip individual drops, I adjust it up but haven't had to do that for 3 weeks or so. I have a lot of ventilation so my PH stays up around 8.1-8.4 even with the higher flow and more CO2 that the reactor releases.

If you get a peristaltic pump, you can set your dripper to exactly the flow rate you want and it will stay there for months. Just replace the squeeze tube inside the pump head once every 6 months and you will have an ultra reliable drip solution. I may do this myself eventually.

When I was running Alk at 9-10, the Alk level was fluctuating alot and I was having to make adjustments each week. I don't have much calcium demand yet so the reactor was also putting out more calcium in the system than it could use up with the reactor putting out that much CO2. When is slowed down the bubble rate to 7 seconds per bubble at 3000 psi, the Alk dropped to the 6.5 - 7.5 range and has stabilized ever since so I just leave it there. The calcium has stabilized at this level too so it seems to work.

Its the perfect height for my liking because its ultra easy to get my arm in the tank to mount frags and such. Your tank width at 30" is going to be awesome!

Thanks! My last tank was 22" in height and I figured with 18 it should be right about where I want it. Also can look down at the corals as well.

I'm running it at about 8 inches over the water (7 inches above the top of the tank).

Hi Shih, Here is a picture and short video of the new Vertex reactor. Its the 1.5 liter model and I like the design it uses, which should make maintenance easier.

Thanks Samantha. Here are a couple of videos of the African Lyrtails that you helped me pick out. They spent a few days in QT getting a treatment of malachite green & formalin just as a preventative measure and they are all eating and doing well. Thanks for suggesting the male to go along with the females. He adds great color and variety to the tank.

That's great Andy! Let me know how it goes with that one. Mine seems to have good PE but the color has become a lighter, more pinkish hue in my tank.
