10g Build

Firefish...he's cool and a nice choice he is out and about from his hole and eating food and not skittish as I feared.....I can see how he can jump ...he is lightning fast.
All my critters are happy and eating this morning. I lucked out.
But now for my 10 gallon.....gobies or clowns?...or just 2 shrimp....

clowns are cool

+1. Nemo is loads of fun and loves to come say hi, lol!

I had a pair of clowns in my 30 gallon for 6 years. They were great to watch....

Well, my birthday was this week, and my 2 boys just walked in an hour ago....they wanted to surprise me & put in my 20 gallon reef tank a firefish, few hermits and a brittle starfish... I am coping the best I can as I know they meant well....but I fear a disaster come morning without acclimation... ...the tank has been fishless for 9 months....water from the LFS bags did not go into the tank at least...
I found the star a bit too cozy with my cucumber up on the side glass within minutes- looked as if it was clinging to it....will the star try to eat it?
Now I am very anxious....have no clue where the firefish went...but he was pretty.
I really don't want the star .....had one for 6 years(12 inches stretched) but it wasn't a brittle....but he grew with the tank...this one seems matured.
Any ideas? The tank might be compromised if the brittle dies...

^had a nightmare like that once....only it was my dad and little sister....they went nuts in the 2.5 gallon fw...i was not happy:sad2:

Yes, at Christmas they came home and put 2 damsels in my 30g with my clowns...
the damsels lasted a month...now I know why....

yea i got the lights to night and all i can say is that they are way brighter than my 130 watt coral life power compact fixture on my 30.

im going to be posting pics shortly!!!!

They look nice! I am going to get them and sell my coralife compact. Thank you for posting the pics, you sold me on it! lol

looks good, but you shouldnt get a firefish, unless you plan on putting a screen on top because they like to jump. also, i would get rid of the bio-wheel, just my opinion. i would also recommend get a small gfci plug strip, there about $11. also what do you have in that cup?

2 days ago the heater on the tank got stuck on and heated the tank up to about 88 degrees. had to go out and get a new heater now the tank is at 76-78 degrees. could the change in temp like that cause the cyano to break out like that?

oh and the up coming weekend im going to a frag swap would i be able to put corals in the tank with no ill effects?

jarred what sand did u use? i see some blue gravel mixed in.
This could be the cause of the cyano on the sand.

the sand is from a little beach my dad knows of that not many people go to, i have had it in a bucket for about 2 months before i used it, the gravel is from the tank being an old freshwater tank and i couldnt get that last little bit out.

What exactly are you doing for filtration? Are you using the penguin 150 as a refugium and going skimmerless?

I've got a spare 10 gallon that i'm going to use to house a pair of petco picasso i got the other day, and i wanted to get some ideas before i started my build. I've already decided to grab the same light you bought, hope you don't mind!

im using a penguin 150 biowheel and penguin biowheel 100 now, no refugium. im not running a skimmer because im only going to be keeping mostly mushrooms and a few lps, i do 1g water changes 2x per week i need to bump it up because i had a few snails die on me and didnt know i was suppose to take them out and now i got cyanobacteria.

thanks

How do the penguins work in a SW tank, i thought they were FW filters. Are you running carbon or a media with them?

They're a lot cheaper than an HOB skimmer. I think i'll try one out with the AC500 refugium i was going to make and do frequent water changes. Thanks!

Jarred,
Have the firefish in my 20 gallon-no way can I catch him..... but now have 2 peps in the 10gal, new branching frogspawn(love it) , ric, and transplanted gsp, sinularia, and mushrooms. I only have the whisper filter for now and a Koralia....My filter turns light brown within 3 days. I keep rinsing when I am not running carbon filters.....are you seeing the same in yours?
I am good on parameters and water changes but still pull junk out on the sponge....

with the bio wheel, how is the flow output? If I bought the AC50, I can trim down the flow....or go with the bio wheel....(no wheels of course)
