10g sump for 29g tank?

I've been going back and fourth between a 10g or 20g Tall sump for my 29g standard tank.... Obviously a 20g would be the best bet, however im a little limited on space and thats why im thinking 10g (i built my stand alittle too sturdy and its cut back on the amount of space I have....... I CAN modify it (will be a pain to do), however Im wanting opinions if a 10g will be sufficient enough or if i should just go for the 20g and modify the stand.

a 20 long is out of the question, its only a 20g tall that would possibly work with modifying.

My main concern is the 10g not having enough overflow space to hold any water from the main display if power failure. Im mostly going to use it to just hold a skimmer, my heater and return pump along with any other equipment. Maybe a refugium if i can squeeze it in.

As long as the return isn't too far underneath the water in the DT, I think you'll be ok with the 10 gallon tank. Just as an example, here's an older picture of the 10 gallon sump I have underneath my standard 20 gallon tank. Everything is pretty much the same today, only the skimmer has been upgraded. Works like a charm.

I've got a 10g sump under my 20 long with glass-holes overflow. No problems when return pump is shut.

perfect. How do you like your glass-holes overflow (while i have you here LOL). I've been looking at possibly going that route instead of custom building... is it loud at all? and which gph size did you end up buying?

thanks for posting a picture, shows me the kind of room that would be available to work with. I think i'll probably go with a 10g since so far two of you have said you use them with no problem.

I've got the nano with teeth (300 or 400 gph?). This is my second gh overflow, while not library quiet it's not obnoxious either. I've been happy with their products.

thats the one i've been thinking about doing. I can't see needing 700gph flow through my small tank. I've been back and forth between doing something custom and taking the time to build a bean animal setup, or taking the easy route and going with glass holes.

I'm going today to have the glass cut to build my sump baffles and also my overflow box for the tank itself.

JUst to check on opinions for glass size/thickness--- For the baffles im planning on the first champer: 8" tall glass (this will house a skimmer ~ tunze 9001 nano skimmer and the heater), than seperating the second (MINI refugium) and third (return) to use 7" tall pieces to build a bubble trap. Do these sizes sound good? was thinking of either 3/32 or 1/4" glass?

for the overflow im planning to use again either 3/32 or 1/4" hopefully smoked/tinted glass.
