well i went to wal-mart and got 2 10g regent tanks for 9 bucks each. they were both labeled tempered glass on a sticker on the bottom. so i got them to the house and went to drilling the side(the part i thought was not tempered. this is what happened

so after breaking out one side i decided to shatter the whole tank so it will fit in the trash easier. i broke all the sides and when i went to hit the bottom it cracked (not shatter like tempered does. so what i am saying is if you buy a $9 regent tank from wal-mart don't drill the sides of it, the bottom is the only non-tempered part. here is a pic of the label

Well it didnt say if the sides, or bottom was tempered but usually the botom is (as far as i seen) i wouldnt buy a tank from walmart i would have bought it from a pet store, more expensive but better quality i think.

Thanks for posting this info! I have been thinking about setting up some breeder tanks and wanted to tie them together to a single filtration system, but wasn't sure the best way. I'm thinking this means it woul be possible to drill a hole in the bottom of these 10gal tanks and insert a PVC pipe to the desired water level then run hoses from the bottom of all the tanks to your sump system. No need to build a box in the tank.

What do you think?

i had the same experience with a 55 gallon. I bought it used from someone who bought it from walmart. I tried drilling the side and it shattered! Not a good Feeling!!!

Reef_|<eeper : i was going to make a modular sump system out of the 2 tanks i got . i have a 56g aga that i just got from a guy in the reef club here. it is a very small stand and the only thing i could think that would fit in the stand is 10g tanks stacked. i went to the lfs today and got 3 15g tanks that i am now going to use for a sump tower. i will post pics on the DIY forum when i start building the tower.

FYI: I side drilled a 9$ perficto 10gallon tank on the side from Big Als in Fort LAuderdale with a dremel, no shatter or cracking. I think the wallmart tanks are just made with glass that is TOO cheap... ;)

I drilled a 10 gallon from walmart with no problems. I used a dremmel and kept it cool with water. Took forever, but it worked.
FWIW,
Stewie
