I have been into reefs for several years. Had a 150 before the house caught fire 2 years ago. Had this 110 out in the garage. After we rebuilt the house I rebuilt the tank.

Tank is a 110 tall With side overflow and return.
2 1 and 1/2 overflowes to the sump
2 1 inch returns
55 gallon sump
undersized skimmer
2 1200 power heads for added current
200 lbs of live rock (been in trashcans floating in water for 2 years)

atanic ho and t5 lighting system (still in storage)

tank is all up plumbed and running for 2 weeks in the garage. been running for 2 days in the house.

Now I get to put the lighting system together while is cycles.

More to come as time goes on.
Any coments are welcome

James

Everything looks good. This is the best part of the hobby, setting up a new tank. Good luck with your project.

Sort of depends on what corals you want to keep. I'm a t5 fan myself but I think if I had a tall tank like that I would consider halides or LEDs with some tight degree optics. Since you have a canopy you have lots of options to retrofit MHs and/or LEDs to go with your t5s. May even consider some PAR 38 bulbs.

Unique tank. Don't think I have ever seen those dimensions.

was thinking of going around 60 or 70% soft and 30-40% stony coral

I likethe movement the soft gives but like the look of the stony

picked up new pump for the tank. now I can eleminate the two powerheadeds in the tank.

Was told it should be around 2500 gph

added Dt's last night to get the tank seeded. Started adding cuc. picked up 10 redleged hermits.

Added lighting sytstem to get the heat cycles going. Threw in a raw shrimp to help get the cycle going. on week three now and still have not gotten the major ammonia spike, Still do not think that my tank is going to cycle like I feel it should.

here is a pic under light

A 2500 gph return pump on a 110 is way too much, IMO. What size is your drain line...it may not even be able to move that much water and you might create a flood. You will likely get a ton of microbubbles and the water won't have enough contact time with the filtration in your sump and/or fuge. Most suggest 5x - 7x your tank volume for a return pump, so you might want to look for something in the 550 - 800 gph range. You can go a bit lower if you have a fuge.

A return pump's only purpose is to circulate water back to you display from your sump. It shouldn't be used as a primary way of generating water movement in the display. Powerheads are needed for that.

Just saw that you have your drain size in the initial post. Looks like two 2" drain lines can handle the flow, but I wouldn't recommend it.

going to be runing a bypass back to the sump to be able to cut back the flowrate on the tank. Right now I have 2 1200 powerheads adding flow to the tank. Was thinking about how much the flow rate might over run the return lines on the overflow.

Thank you

couple more pics of the lighting system right now.
