Ok, soooo I'm venturing into the wonderful world of saltwater tanks today , after lots of studying ;-) LOVE THIS SITE! sooo, I had an aquarium a few years ago, but it was rather large soo this 12 gal nano is going to be totally different for me. I need to know what I should expect, what kind of products I should buy with my cube today when I actually purchase it and how I should go about the initial setup.

I assume your going with a Nanocube or Aquapod or another all in one system?

If so ditch the media that comes with it (sponges, bioballs, ceramic rings), they are good for fish only setups but not reefs.

Upgrade the pump to a maxijet 900.

Get filter floss to use instead of sponges, you will need to change it out weekly (throw the used floss away).

Get Chemi-pure and purigen for the back chambers, both are good at improving water quality and keeping the water looking clear.

All of these can be found at Dr. Foster and Smiths website

Need a heater, no more than a 100W, a 75W might be perfect, I like Ebo Jagr heaters at Premium Aquatics but something like a stealth would also work.

Here's a good link if you feel like reading, really the first 10 pages are helpful, after that it turns into tank updates and answering questions and covers a lot of topics.

Buy the very highest quality live rock you can find- since that will be the backbone of your setup. Also consider getting a quality protein skimmer if your budget and particular setup allows it. Other things are needed of course but I feel these are some of the key things. Then be extremely patient- probably the hardest part of all...
