Here is our custom tank so far:

Total of eight holes drilled. Waiting on the RO/DI unit so we can fill it.

Here are some details:

2 - 2" for closed loop drain - feeding a dart pump
2 - 1.5" for each side of the closed loop return manifold
2 - 1.5" for surface skimmer drain to sump
2 - 1" for back wall sump returns

Thanks - The closed loop was a challenge to make but it turned out better then hoped - Hopefully I get the flow I am looking for. I'm looking for ~1800 from the CL.

I like the set up.....but CL's always make me shudder. I think about how big of a pump you have to have (= electricity bill) to make sure that you have the flow you are looking for. If you haven't decided on a pump yet look at the sequence pumps. Preferably the Marlin if you can still find it, it has a 37 foot head pressure rating at only an average wattage of like 250.

sixspeed & wartskin : For a pump I'll be using a flow rated reeflo dart for now.

fufu: I'll be keeping a wide variety of sps. The fish are up to the wife - so it changes on a daily basis!

Keep in mind rigel that the dart only has a head pressure max of about 12 feet with all your bends and outlets the flow coming out of each one is going to be pretty minimal, you may still need to add supplemental flow with Tunze's, Vortechs or something like that unless you add a larger pump.

The dart will be about 2 feet below the return and flex pvc will be used to plum it. As long as I get ~1800GPH from the CL I will be happy. I don't think that will be a problem. 1800GPH from the CL + 600GPH from the sump return will be 19x turnover. Thanks for your concern though. With your Tunze USA tag it does not surprise me that you suggest a use Tunze's as well!

I'm not a closed loop guy but that does seem like alot of nozzles for one pump which could mean lower actual flow thoughout the tank than anticipated.

Well it is easily calculated. Basically from a 1/2" nozzle you can expect ~300GPH. So, 6 nozzles * 300GPH = 1800. Generally its a good idea to not only add total height but for every 90 add a foot as well. Once you have your nozzles and head space requirement then choose a pump to match. The dart is rated at about 2600GPH for my head space and I am looking for 1800GPH.

Basically you set up your CL then choose a pump. You can do it the other way around but its wiser to make the CL first. Hope this helps.

You most certainly want to do your homework before you put eight holes in your new shiny 120 gal tank! Will post more pics once we move to phase two - water in the tank.

I work for them but I recommend as many different products as I can when I am not in the Tunze forum. I use to work for Marine depot a couple of years ago so I know that Tunze is not the only good product out there. Maxi jets will work just fine if thats what you prefer.

Sexy looking manifold. 20X turnover is a bit on the light side though -- you will likely have some dead spots behind your rock structure. Where were you planning to drill your return pump returns? Might be able to combat most of that problem with them, but yeah, be prepared that you may need supplemental in-tank flow.
