120 Gallon - SPS w/ DIY LEDs

Hello all,

I have been a long time follower of this forum but I haven't made an effort to give back to the community. So here is my attempt, I hope some of you members will enjoy this.

I moved this 120 gallon to its current residence a year ago today...it had been in its previous home for 9 months. When I moved the aquarium here I was running all of the same equipment except for lighting, at the time I was running 2 x 250 watt metal halides 20k XM on PFO ballasts. For actinic supplementation I had 2 x 65 watt Power Compact actinic.

Come September 2012 I had a choice to make about lighting since all of my light bulbs needed to be replaced and I really wanted to dabble with LEDs for the first time. I decided on going with a LED setup that was not commonly used but I thought would be an affordable and an efficient light source.

Here are the pics with the seven par 38 led bulbs I chose to go with:

Now fast forward to mid February me being me....I start pondering perhaps I should try building my own led light. One of the main reasons for this change was due to the fact that several of my friends would come and see my aquarium and would comment that the cree leds are so much brighter and superior to the bridgelux and I had to see for myself.

So remember with par 38s I had 7 bulbs with 12 leds in each to get me 84 leds that were currently over the 120. I believe the bulb breakdown per par was 7 Blue, 4 cool white, and 1 red.

I decided on going with rapid led for the new light build and ended up ordering:

48 x Cree XT-E RB w/ 80' optics
24 x Cree XP-G R5 5w w/ 80' optics

I had traded with a fellow hobbyist for the - Mean Well HLG-185-42B dimmable Driver.

I mounted the leds on a 3' heatsink and suspended the light 12" off the water.

Here are pictures of the aquarium almost two months after replacing the par 38's with my DIY LED build.

Other than my lighting changes I haven't changed anything else with the setup of my aquarium I use the following equipment.

Vertex 170 alpha cone
Knop Calcium reactor
Kalkwasser top off Spectrapure Litermeter
Filter socks - replaced twice a week
Spectrapure dual cannister media reactor - gfo and carbon.

Fish:

Blue Tang
Scopas Tang
Sailfin Tang
Scissortail Goby x 2
Squamii Anthias x 1
Blue Chromis x 2
Exquisite Wrasse
Purple Wrasse
Melanarus Wrasse
Percula Clowns x 2
Bangaii Cardinal
Green Clown Goby
Lamarcks Angel
Chalk Bass

I have been toying around with lowering the intensity of the led the past few weeks because it seems that some of the acros on the left side under less light are actually becoming more vibrant and richer in colour compared to the same colonies I have directly underneath the light.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated,

Patrick

Hello all,

Smtank: Thank you for the kind words.

Ampemployee1: This has been one of the variables that has been on my mind as of late. After allowing the corals to adjust to the lights for two weeks I was running the LEDs at 70% for 5 hours and 100% for 4 hours a day. However the one large acro on the left of the aquarium has decent color but I have a small colony of the same piece that's color is ten fold better with green and purple tips instead of brown and purple tips. This has me know only running the LEDs at 70% for 9 hours.
It's also interesting to note that with the driver I aquired I can only run the LEDs at 733 mA. Where as these LEDs can be run at up to 1500 mA apparently. When building the light fixture I had convinced myself that I would be ordering the second driver to split the feeds but when I contacted rapid they suggested that I should just run it with the single driver and go from there if need be. As of right now I would have to say that was sound advice on there end.

I would like to dabble with some UV LEDs down the road and see if there is any notable changes that occur with them but I haven't seen any tanks with them actively running them.

I viewed a maxspect razor 16000k last week and I really liked the overal appearance of the fixture but I must admit the color combination of the cool white with warm white both channels at 100% appeared to me as unbearable to look at. I get that the warm whites have the red spectrum in them but it just seemed to visually drown out the blue spectrum from the light.

Take care,

Patrick

Hello,

karsseboom: Receiving this compliment from you means alot....thank you very much. I've been watching your current build thread with great envy your attention to detail is something that I can only hope to ever achieve.

I noticed we are utilizing the same protein skimmer...was wondering are you using filter socks on your setup? I'm running two socks for my drains that are replaced twice a week but your skimmers consistency appears alot thicker and darker then mine.

Cheers,

Patrick

Hello belgian_waffleman,

Here are the pics you requested...the heatsink is one solid piece as you can see from the photos. It measures 36" long and is suspended 12" off the water surface. I have two 4" computer fans on either end for some form of cooling but to be honest the fixture doesn't get particularly hot to the touch what so ever.

Cheers,

Patrick

Hi teebone110,

I live in Peterborough ON.......I'm not close to the coral hot bed that is london, it would seem you guys have something in your water. The number of high end sps systems showing up around you is truly ridiculous.

I would really enjoy attending the frag swap this summer but its over three hours each way and I'm scheduled for the cottage.

Take care,

Patrick

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick update and a few photos primarily for myself so I can attempt to track the progress of the aquarium and see it change. As we all know when we look at our box everyday it looks as though it never changes unless its something bad.

Everything is pretty well the same within the aquarium. Only change I made this month was ditching the filter socks on the drains. I am a big advocate of utilizing them but the weather has actually gotten warm in our country and in doing so there seems to be a lot that needs to be done outside and I can't always guarantee I will swap out the socks every three to four days.

If anyone reading this has input on filter socks Id love to hear your opinions on them and if I should get them back on there.

If anything I'd assume I should see an increase in skimmate production from the protein skimmer but its too early to say if thats happening.

Take Care,

Patrick

Full Tank Shot

Unknown Soft Coral - Camera doesn't pick it up, but its green with redish brown polyps. Any ID would be nice.

A couple indo acans and I think a micromussa?

Pic of right side, competition is becoming a problem here and I'm going to have to remove some acropora since there loosing against the montipora. Just not sure how to remedy the problem easily since the acros are all fully encrusted.

Looks awesome Patrick!

I took off my filter socks some time ago. With each water change, I remove water from a sump compartment and shop vac out the detritus and debris... Seems easier to do over the long run as opposed to changing socks every couple of days.

Oh this just got me so pumped! i kinda just went with an educated guess as to my new lighting s/u and its so close to his. Oh i just got chills when i saw your LED s/u and Tank photos. I think ill be good, and thanks for shearing. it was some info that i was very happy to see. great looking reef btw.

I didnt go all RB / white though.
