Tempered is a heat treating process that is used on glass or metal for that metal . But in this case it s glass it strengthens the glass(debateable point) , however you cannot drill the tempered glass to my knowledge because it will crack.
Correct me anybody here if I am wrong.................
I have no pics. It is left over from when I ran my African cichlid import business. It is new shape..... I ll try to take a pic and get somebody to post it for me.

All glass tanks usually have a tempered bottom but the sides are not tempered. If this is the case, you can drill the back or an end pannel but not the bottom. If all the glass is tempered it can be drilled but it needs to be done differently with a sand blaster and is not worth it.

it seems like the bottom was all that was tempered, i do not think that all glass tempers all the glass in the tank
