A siphon break stops a siphon by introducing air into the line. The air can expand, so it loses the pull on the water. (Simplistic explanation)
In this case, the weight of the water is pushing it out of the bulkhead.

Does that make sense? I am not explaining this very well, am I?

No, I do understand what you're saying and I do understand it will drain to that level, but I don't understand how my nano has been running all this time without having the piece above the water level, it simply has a hole below the water level.

Upon closer inspection, there is a piece that comes up above the water level ever so slightly so I'm guessing that's what's stopping the drain?

Well... sort of but it would be a huge PITA (long story about why).

My 33g sump normally runs 7-8" of water through it out of the 18" of height so, unless I feel like lots of work in the next couple days, I may just place the Loc-line fittings directly under the water level so they only drain an inch or two out of the tank when the return pump shuts off. This should work OK?

This will work...until something OR someone bumps the Loc-Line... :eek2:
You could build the pieces ahead of time, drain your tank down, add the plumbing, fill back up and be running in a couple of hours...
Just as simple as that...

How long is the tubing from the Loc-Line?

The water in the sump raises 5.5" meaning I have an additional 5.5" of space in the sump.

The reason it would be a giant headache is because the returns are plumbed with 1" vinyl tubing, rather than PVC so I'd have to rig up some sort of crazy adapter for it to work. I'll see if I can find something the next time I'm over Home Depot way tho.

Fast forward to yesterday: it's up and running! Thought I might as well post a picture. I just stuck some extra lighting I had around for the picture (2x 6500k T5, 2x Super Actinic T5). It's got about 80 lbs of rock in it right now. Let me know what y'all think!

Guess it's time for an update. I added another 20 pounds of rock from the nano I took down but it needs rearranging so that's one of my next projects. I'm working on the canopy right now, have the MH pendants installed now as well as the T5s, just need to cover it in plywood.

I've also had my damsel from the nano in there for a month or two now, he's doing great. I guess that's all to report, next thing that really needs doing is getting some black acrylic to line the overflows, it looks awful how it is.

I'll be sure to get a pic up once I'm done the canopy!
