125g stand question

Tank dimensions: 60x24x20"

I am going to be building my stand in the coming weeks and was curious if I might be able to use 1x4's for the skeleton? Or at least one 1x4 for the top back framing?

My tank is drilled on the bottom about 1.25" from the side and the use of a 2x4 would block the bulkhead.

I wouldn't use 1x4's. Plywood would be the best option here or you could rip down the 2x4 with a table saw on the side where the bulk heads is or just cut out a little bit of wood exactly where the bulkhead is. A drill press and hole saw would work great for the latter.

I agree that plywood would be the best option. It normally is.

There is nothing that says the tank needs to sit at the extreme outer edge of the stand. If the perimeter of the tank sat in the middle of the 2X4 (which is only really 1.5" wide) you would still have about 1/2" worth of clearance between the inside of the board and the bulkhead fitting.

I meant to ask about 3/4" plywood stands as well. I suppose I can have the tank rest on the middle or the inner edge of the wood as well. Thanks for the advice.

Exactly and I'd use either 3/4 ply or 2x's, just step it out on the perimeter to give clearance for bulkheads

Would it possible to leave a cutout of 3/4" plywood where the overflow is? It's 14" long.

So in other words, the tank wouldn't be resting on any part of the stand where the overflow is.

On a trimmed tank no big deal at all, on a trimless try to keep to minimum that you need for bulkheads plus whatever room you need to get a grip on the nut to tighten, but yes, common to cut that section out.
