I live only about twenty minutes from Atlantis aquarium in Riverhead, New York. This tank never ceases to amaze me, it's the second biggest reef tank in the world I was told by a few of the workers, hundreds of amazing fish in there. The skimmers alone (all four of them) were the size of small cars Lol. I couldn't imagine what kind of specially designed lighting or powerheads they use for something like this. They also have a 120,000 gallon shark tank with about five 6-8 foot sharks with a few other groupers that weigh 600 lbs roughly each. Well here, Enjoy ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425531335.601262.jpg this is only half of the tank View attachment 310251View attachment 310252ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425531389.543360.jpgView attachment 310254

I wanted to start getting more involved in the local aquariums here in Tennessee. I do aquatic maintenance for a living so I thought it would be really cool to attain some business status with one. It would be really neat to work at that one!

Like Ted mentioned in the other thread Bill has a tank that's larger than this and Drew is building one that larger right now. Both of which are privately owned

that bill guy has an amazing tank :-P

Drew? Is he the one with the 30k system?

How did the OP get pics behind the scene? Do they give tours? i wonder if they would ever frag anything in there :-P

I believe it's 20,000g, and although there are larger reef tanks, this one has the largest mass of captive grown stony corals.

Those skimmers you pictured are not connected to the reef. They have one exactly like them though behind the reef.

As for lighting, I believe they have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 - 1,000w halides over that sucker with a couple multichip LED's that they are trying out and a 400w 20k Moonlight. They have a 1.5hp hayward pool pump for regular circulation pushing through a bunch of sea swirls, a 300g surge tank and a hydro wizard for a wavemaker.

Wonder how they keep the bubble algae, hair algae, mojano, aptasia, you know little things like that out of it..
I'm thinking they need to share that with us...lol

A lot of it is most likely fish that eat those things. Quite a few of the fish that eat pests are too large for our tanks.

Like what exactly? I would say that there aren't things like that in the tank since there are so many fish in the tank to begin with that aren't eating as much as they should be that causes them to eat algae and other pests that otherwise would be left alone

There are urchins, wrasse's, tangs, blennies, parrotfish, snails, crabs etc etc. Basically crazy amounts of control species. They also dose various chemicals to keep phosphates down and run a few reactors that around seven feet tall.

Would probably be enough room to keep stress low and not really end up causing too many issues in the system IMO...

From what I've been told, it's pretty much always in the system but the fish are well fed and healthy so it tends to keep any problems at bay.

Riverhead!! Why would they build an aquarium center out there...three hours from nyc and nothing there. If I get to nyc, I'm sure not going to Riverhead - unless I'm there for a week.

WDLV- Walter would be able to tell you everything about the exhibits at Atlantis, my wife and I met up with him and at the time his wife, and his son, back in 2010 it was a great experience seeing everything behind the scenes. Walter even brought in a nice pair of clowns for their little breeding program.

The aquarium at Riverhead is not tremendous, but it is quite nice and worth a trip. The reef tank there is amazing! Correct me if I am wrong, but the Atlantis Aquarium also operates "Reef Gen" which is a grower and supplier of some very nice corals (available only through retailers, not directly.)

As a former east end Long Islander, and one time Manhattan dweller as well, I can assure you that there is a world beyond New York City. As far as things to do, in the summer the island beats the city hands down! Beautiful beaches, sailing, biking, hiking, botanic gardens, beautiful fall foliage, etc, etc. In fact, I could easily visit eastern Long Island, and not even consider schlepping in to the city to experience the hot, muggy, sweaty weather during July and August.

And don't forget the "Big Duck!"

I live on the East End of Long Island. Haven't been into NYC in 5 years and haven't missed a thing. And fwiw, Riverhead is only about 1.5 hours from NYC, not three.
