180 -> 200 gallon build

Heh, you beat me to the update ;)

I'll update with some pictures later today. The wall is breached, and the plumbing to the basement should be done today. I HOPE to have this sucker online and starting to transfer over this week. I'll be posting a thread on some fish as well as corals becuase I need more space in my frag tank right now during the move.

The wife made a really nice cloth wrap from around the stand currently. I've been busy with the nursery, so honestly am not sure exactly when I'll get around to building the skin. It also depends on what all we end up doing in the living room style wise with the kids coming (which is another reason I didn't want to rush completing the skin).

Wall breached.

One thought, you might want to put some type of insulation your some thing between the flex pvc and the duct where it is touching. That would be a possible unwanted heat source during the winter or unwanted cooling source in the summer. IMO. Probably not that big a deal but one to think about.

I thought about putting a piece of styro in there. However, with the thickness of Spaflex, do you think that heat/cold will penetrate it enough to affect the water?

I think it could. Because of it sitting on the pipe. With the wall being insulated the pipe will be able to hold it's temperature so that it can transfer through the pipe. The one that has a little space between it should be better off than the other one. But most likely you are right, it wont be an issue. It was just a thought on my part.

200 is officially online and plumbed in ;)

Unions and Savko are the greatest. Plumbing advice for those that haven't done much, and same ole same ole to those that have done plenty... Use a union near any major pipe changes, anywhere you think you might add/delete pipe, near any direction changes, etc. And after you're done there, then add more.

With the unions I had on my old setup, it only took me four minutes to replace a Panworld 100PX-X with a 150PS and unscrew a few unions and insert new pipe, turn a few ball valves, and the new tank was online.

It's also sad I only needed a couple of sticks of PVC and two unions from Savko to complete the job. How many of us could restock Savko with the spare parts we have lying around :D

Not to mention, even though there is cost involved in the unions, you end up saving money and pipe probably in the long run. I know one section of pipe I used on this project was from 2-3 years ago on my original 58.

So... unions and dual true union ball valves... gooooooooood.

The other thing I did, but typically see not mentioned on build threads... I had 100+ gallons of RO/DI ready, and 50 gallons salt ready. Always have extra water on hand, becuase you never know when something might go wrong or you might need to do a quick water change.

Two nights ago, I rigged up a temporary 2x250MH lighting setup that rests on the 200. Assuming I have no leaks tomorrow (all looks good now), I'll probably start moving a few small things to ensure everything is good in the new tank. Then the craziness starts. I have some space cleared out in the frag tank, but it's never fun trying to find a spot for everything during a move.

Awwww yeah... Breaking in the new SPS tank right, with a huge chunk of Porkyspawn!! :D

Wait... what... SPS?

MMM... pictures on multiple sides now.

It use to be such a widdle guy...

Some general tank pics. I'm really torn on the rockwork, whether to add more, to leave it open, etc. I guess I'll see how it looks after the 400's are on top instead of the 250's, and how the corals react.

I just set up the exact same tank. Here's a shot of my rock work. I just threw it in a couple of days ago so I'm sure there will be some more rearranging. I like the open look but I always seem to revert to having more coral mounting surfaces.

I love the look of an open rockwork, and when I tried it I could never get it the way I had it in my mind. Also I disliked the amount of room on the rock. So I was going to start mounting corals on the back pane. Now I never finished my plan and ended up just throwing all the rockwork together. But something you might want to try and plus it will look pretty sweet in the end.

Hey Eric I say you should just leave it with just the porky-spawn and see how long it takes you to fill the whole tank with it......

Seriously though, I know it is going to look really good when you are done with it.

What do you think of those stand pipes Eric? I can only get them to stop making a sucking noise with my valves almost completely closed. Did you have to tinker with yours at all? I took some tape and covered the side holes and drilled a larger air hole so I can run my return pump with the valves open. I still have a bit of an air sucking sound. I think it could be cured with an air valve and some tubing to silence it.

Just curious if you ran into any issues.

I have probably 600-700 gallons running through now. I don't understand the holes in the side though. They certainly aren't perfect and could use some tweaking.

Thanks Lunchbucket. It looks like a lot of rock but it's only about 150#'s. I've got it stacked pretty loosely.

Mike660r - I'm feeding my returns with two Mag 9.5's wide open and I don't have too much noise coming from the overflows. I have a glass cover over the top though which does muffle some of the sound.
