180 -> 200 gallon build

I have one in the tank already, and two coming up from the 180 ;) I'll be lucky to keep water in the tank.

Moke I was going tpo post the same question. I am having problems with mine also. If they are not Flushing, they are gurgling or I've even had them whistling. Whole house is getting annoyed with the noise because it is in the main living area of the house. I had to throttle way back where there is just a trickle overflowing. I've tried many things. This weekend I was able to throttle up a little and onle very few flushes that I could live with. I am however not even near what the overflows can handle. I am hoping I can find the cure to this and when I build a canopy it will muffle whatever sound is left.

Sorry for the hijack Rocklem. Tank looks good and glad to hear that you do not have much noise.

Hijack away ;) I don't have my pump full throttle, and will likely see the issue soon enough myself.

Hey guys, I found a solution.

Go buy two new 1 1/2" 90 degree elbows, two 3/8" threaded to hose slip in adapters and some 3/8" clear flex hose. Drill a 1/2" hole in the top and thread in the adapters. I didn't even have to tap the hole. I used my 1/2" bit and tilted it just a bit to enalge the hole and it made a small lip inside for the threads of the adapter to grab on. I took my air rachet and threaded the adapter into the 90 degree elbow and let it spin it in tight. I inserted the 3/8" hose with about 8" of hose sticking out. I then started the pumps. I trimmed an inch at a time off the hose until I only had about a 1/2" water rising and falling in the overflow. It's nice and quiet now. I am now running my Iwaki 70 wide open with about 15' of head pressure total on it. Here are some photos.

Cool, Thanks Mike, I was trying things with the original pipe. Allowing more air, constricting air, adding hose, etc, etc. Did you try your mod on the original pipe? I never thought to replace the 90's.

Obviously the original was designed to handle water, but I guess they never said quietly.

My next step was going to swap out the pipes for an extra set of megaflows that I bought with the tank not knowing that it came with it's own.

Also, I've seen guys do something similar, but they put a ballvalve on the end so they can control airflow if they need to, I don't know if you'd need to or not, but for a few bucks you may be able to fine tune even more.

Thanks again for the great info, I can't wait to put the noise behind me!

Taz,

I tried enlarging the air hole one bit size at a time and I still got that sucking sound out of the two side holes. I pulled them out and taped them up and it got better. I bought valves to go on the hose but they turned out to add to much restriction. In my opinion if you feel you want that fine tune control. Jump up to a 1/2 hose and fitting. Adding more parts just makes it more complicated. You need to keep it as simple as possible. The 3/8 hose itself was enough of a restrictor for me.

Long day...

It went pretty well. I got most of my larger SPS colonies into the new tank in mostly one piece. Even some of the ones I thought I was going to only be able to turn into small frags (large dark orange digi that grew over 3 rocks), I got some huge chunks with a hammer and screwdriver. My frag tank is FULLLLLLLLL. I have two big caps in the sump I have no room for.

I have almost 2/3 of a 100 gallon rubbermaid full of rock (took the pictures before putting them into the large rubbermade trough/sump containers we use). They'll cook for a while unless people want to grab rock now. I found all kinds of odd pieces when I was going through the rock. A few monster sponges that were almost 4x4", a lot of small batches of very dark purple sponges, a very large crab (very black) but he was buried in a rock and not coming out, etc. I was amazed at the amount of scarlett crabs I have. I would say a good 50-75% are still kicking years later, which is cool. I rescued as absolutely as much of the crabs and snails as I could find.

The old 180 is still online and will remain that way for a bit for two reasons. First is, I'm trying to coax all of my nassarius snails out of the sand with food. I pulled a couple dozen, but am sure there are more. Second, all of my fish went very well, except for what I expected... one of my leopards is missing :( :( I hope he's in the sand and just hiding.

The clowns went first, they were easy to get out. The tomini was actually pretty ok as well. The lineaus was hungry, so I snatched him pretty quick. The hooded, anthias, and blue tang played hard to get, but it's hard to hide when there isn't much rock on the tank. The algae blenny was the funniest. I've only had him for a couple of months, and he's already VERY friendly. He'll come sit on my hand and wait for food. I pulled out a rock and was inspecting for snails... and I see two eyes looking at me. He was just perched on top like it was a normal every day thing. Looking at me like "Sup... we going on a trip? do I get food on the trip?" After I got everyone else out, I was still missing both leopards. My big male showed himself about 30 minutes after I was done playing in the tank. He quickly burried when I put the net in, but it was in a shallow area. I HATE HATE HATE digging for the leopards, but this is one of the only times it makes sense. He chilled in the new tank for a bit before sand diving. I REALLY hope my second will be roaming in the tank tomorrow when the actinics come on, looking for food. Keep your fingers crossed...

On a good note, I picked up a THIRD (yes, still third becuase my other one WILL make it) leopard from Phishy yesterday. She's maybe 2" at max. She's already in the tank and was out for a few hours, but she buried before I started moving the fish. That will be a surprise when she comes out tomorrow ;) My Black Foot Trocus went spawn crazy when I moved them to the 200 :) That was cool to watch.

must resist buying new tank................................

your build is awesome..............please keep the pictures coming!

WOOT!!! Back to 3/3 leopard wrasses :) About 20 minutes after the actinics came on, it was cruising around looking for some goodies.

Mike660r , Did one pipe and it did clear most of the noise, going to do the other tomorrow. Do you get the rushing air noise? almost like a whistle. my water level ends up right at the very bottom of the downward 90? I would like to get it higher loke yours, I gues I'll have to tinker a little more

Thanks again

I get the rushing air noise every now and again. Now that my hood is on I can barely hear it. I just arced the hose a little to eliminate the slight whistle. You will have to play with the hose length or open your return pump up a little more.

Hey Eric,

I've got pics up in my thread now that show the hood.

Love those leopard wrasses. Do they prefer a softer substrate or more of rock type? I'm thinkin about goin for one or two myself. Nice job Eric.

Thanks Mike, I'll take a look.

fliynhi, pretty small grain. They basically dive into it, so course can literallly tear them up pretty bad. A good Leopard thread was started in the fish section. Good reading and I've added detailed info there as well.

I'm still arranging SPS, so I'll take some good pictures after I'm done.

Mine is a mixture of some of the small grain of Phishy, and some remaining southdown a member had. The fine grain should work well.

Thats not good enough, we want pictures NOW!

Ok I've read the entire thread and have gotten plenty of ideas. My thanks to rocklem for the post. I also see that several others have bought the same tank, can you also post some pics or direct me towards your build thread. also did any of you get starfire glass?

Hehe... So... way to long later, I finally got around to making a hood. It's been a while, but 1) my hands have been full, and 2) I couldn't find any designs I liked what so ever.

I needed something that was "floating" per say. I wanted the lights high enough that I could take pictures top down, but that also means they need to be stationary and not in the way at the same time. I didn't really want to attach something to the wall. Being that the tank is high, I also needed to block the light from entering the room and blinding us, while still having 100% access up front with little to no issues. A lot of requirements that throw out almost ALL of the normal hood designs.

After spending I can't imagine how many hours (10's easily), ironically I found the answer in a completely off topic thread, posted by our very own szwab. He has a fancy light mover built in.

I had a bunch of super cheap pine left over from another project, so it isn't fancy what so ever. I will also make some design changes, when and if I ever build it out of better material. Only took a few hours to throw together out of the scrap I had. I'll get to skinning the stand some day too... maybe. I'll end up tearing this down and staining or painting it for protection.

The entire front section just lifts/slides off.

Nothing fancy on the front section, just a ridge where the tank rim is, and a brace.
