180 -> 200 gallon build

The starting of my build thread for the 200. This will replace my 180 (6x2x2) in the basement. The 200 will go in my living room.

The tank is a Marineland "Deep Dimension" 48 wide, 36 deep, 27 tall, starfire front, black silicone. Overall, the tank is built VERY well, other than one thing (but we'll see that here in a few)...

Images taken a little while back most have already seen, but for reference:

No 4x4's like my 180, I'll use 2x4's and 2x6's on this build. Due to the size of the stand, I can build part of it outside, but the main parts need to be built inside (stand 49x37x ~40). The boards have roughly 1/4" ripped off both sides to bring the 2x4 down to 3" wide. I found that it's much easier to work with them this way since everything is dead flat. It's also a way to clean up the horrible horrible horrible wood that most places locally have. I haven't decided on what wood to use on the outside, but I'd like to get a dark cherry or walnut look to match some of the furniture in the living room.

I started on the bottom and used the Kreg setup this time. I'm pretty impressed with it, and it's a piece of cake to use.

I spent about an hour and a half doing he bottom and making sure everything was almost perfectly square. I'm only 1/32" off in the corner to corner test diagonally. I then put it on my Marineland to see how it all looked... At that point, the expletives started flowing...

Yes, the corner to corner shows 1/2" off in distances. So I am actually going to have to build my stand square and then pull it crooked to get the tank to sit on it right... :mad2: :mad2:

The good news is, I calmed down with a ride in the new toy. The Mini was SOOOO not going to hold two baby seats for the twins on the way, so I traded my truck and the mini in for an older model Jeep Wrangler. Wife gets the 335 for now, but the X3 is already on the way to replace it. I'll probably get an X5 for the winter for myself.

Already had it halfway apart, doors off, fixing a few issues here and there...

Glass. I'm going to give them a call on Monday. Completely ludicrous if you ask me. No reason for a mass produced tank to be that far off.

wow thats pretty bad, at least you measured before you went to set the tank down on your finished stand.....

I called Marineland, who in turn dumped me off to Perfecto. Even though Marineland is the parent company, they still rely on Perfect to handle all tank issues.

The Marineland guy was very nice, understood the issue, and commented that it should have never passed QT. The lady at Perfecto was confused and only offered up the fact that all their tanks are hand made so they aren't perfect (which I really tried to not chuckle at). She said my only option was to talk to an engineer and ship the tank back. I told her I had pictures of the tank and the bad dimensions, so she took that via email. We'll see what their response is...

Very nice... I'll be tagging along. I just found out about these tanks a week or so ago, and will be considering one on my next upgrade.

Very interested to see how they handle this. I have my eyes on the 72" for when we finish our basement.

They had me pull some other numbers (length of trim sections, etc) and the build info (which is intelligently partially hidden and covered in silicone so it can't be removed). The engineer agreed it was out of spec and wants to replace it. No ETA, but it sounded like they wanted it complete ASAP.

A little painful to get a hold of the originally, but a very good result.

They'll be contacting Phishy, but according to her it's their mistake to handle (including cost).

Believe it or not that is how a customers problem SHOULD be handled. The customer should not have to fight to get a problem corrected but a lot of companies don't believe in that nowadays.
