180 gallon reinforced floor needed?

How long has it been up like that? I don't want to take any chances. I'd be really upset if something happened to the tank. Plus, this house wasn't built very well. We have had to gut it and redo a lot of things. Yours is on the second floor huh? Mine will go on an outside wall.

I am assuming you have carpet on the floor? Has anyone just pulled the carpet up in the corner and looked to see if there is concrete under it? If not you maybe able to see which way the boards are running.

He trimmed out the floor about a month before we got the fish tank. He doesn't want to remove the carpet to check. Trust me, I already asked. I asked if we could just cut a hole in the floor and pour some concrete if needed. He doesn't want to do that either. :sad1: :hammer: I even offered to start digging the hole. He is afraid I will get hurt. BLAH! I'm frustrated.

why would u need to do tat?? if u have a crawl space. there gotta be an opennin for u to get into the crawl space. and for support i did this for my 320 gallon. i poured a 6 in concrete with rebar inside of it once it cured i have 8 concrete block with 4 x 6 against the joist and use simpson tie to tie it together my tank be filled for 6 wks now and its hasnt fall thru yet. 6 wks =) cycle time. today sump and all go in and im going to have about 570 gallon total water volume

'best guess' estimates...120 g water (a 180 only holds about 150g, less rock displacement) =1100lbs, glass tank= 300#+,wood stand= 150#, live rock=300#, sand=150#, canopy w/ lights= 100#, sump gallons? 30-50g would add 300+#, and then there is the human factor (everyone seems to forget)...you and your wife and a friend standing there, enjoying the reef...add about 5-700 lbs,(I know that weight is not there ALL the time, but you're heard of the 'straw, that broke the camels back')....seems like an easy 3000 lbs to me, all in about 24 sq. ft. ...I think it is much safer to figure the high end weight for a safety factor!

remeber, saltwater weights closer to 12 pounds per gallon...

Not too sure but what if you laid a piece of plywood or something down on the carpet and tried a studfinder? It could pickup the joists in the floor. Older houses are built a lot stronger than todays houses and as long as it sits across 3 boards you should be fine. If you don't support it you'll always be afraid the floor is sinking and going to crack the tank.

Justin, I will suggest that to my boyfriend. I'm getting really frustrated just waiting around. =( That may be a good idea. I'm not sure that would work though. Through carpet, pad, osb board, and hardwood floors. =*(
I'm willing to dig it out myself. Sheesh. :hammer:
