180 gallon tank build

the hd high desert play sand is calcium carbonate ,somebody called the company a couple of weeks ago . i would rinse it in a pillowcase first

Two bags was more than enough for my 120g which is 8sq ft. I layed out the rock first, then put the sand in and pushed it toward the back of the tank so its higher there with 1 to 2.5 inches with just a covering 1/4 to 1/2 inch in front. There enough to keep my diamond goby and sea cucumber busy and enough for wrases in the back.

RE: Home Depot Sand

RE: Home Depot Sand

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I called the distributor of the Pavestone High Desert Play Sand sold at Home Depot in NY. He emailed me the MSDS sheet and other analysis information. It is 80-99% Calcium Carbonate, MAXIMUM 1%, with Dolomite being whatever is left.

From a geochemistry standpoint it is fine, there is considerable debate over appearance however. It is all a matter of taste.

Daveverdo, Thanks for the precise and salient information. I do like the aesthetics of the oolictic stuff.

I have always been a fan of Kolorscape when its my dime. However in the cause of others I like to recommend the silver and black stuff. Dr. Mac had it in the frag tanks at MACNA and I was blown away by it. Absolutely stunning to look at. It really sets off the coral on the sand bed.

FWIW I've been using the various CC based sand from HD since '96 in both saltwater and fresh setups without a single problem. Infact its all through ou most of my rock.

When it come to LR do you have enough lead time to mae up DIY rock? It takes about 2 months to produce great stable rock. But its by far the cheapest and most ecologically responsible way to go. If you need help PM me. I am a somewhat pro when it comes to rock of this nature.

In my earlier post I left out one of the most important parts of the analysis for some people.

MAXIMUM 1% silica.

The rest is calcium carbonate (mostly in the form of crushed limestone) and dolomite.

Sorry about that.

My personal choise if I chose from the 2 cheap solutions would be the Troplical playsand over the Kolorscape but After moving my 90Reef I wouldn't do a DSB anymore. Too mush overload and buildup over time.

Still looking for a diamond plated core bit. Does anyone know where I can get one?? I need to drill a 1 1/2" bulkhead and a 1" bulkhead.

Try Glass-Holes.com. I've never used them but they have low prices. I would suspect their bits won't last too long but if you are only doing a few holes the prices are intriguing.

Ebay my friend ;). Like Tom said, bits won't last forever but you only need to do a few holes and they'll certainly last for that.

Btw, where is Granada NY?

Also check out Lau on ebay. I used bits from him in the past for a couple of holes and everything turned out good.

Gananda is a community within the Town of Macedon. It is 10 miles east of the Penfield Wegmans on rt 441/Penfield Rd. 20 minutes from Downtown Rochester. Check out Google Satelite. I'm the 4th house in on the left. I love my backyard!!!

Haffs, I'll check him out... thanks.

Ah, so other side of rochester. I'd have offered help with the 1" bulkhead (45mm hole size), but that's a little far for a bit you can buy for $5 off ebay ;)

PROBLEM

PROBLEM

My 180 is drilled for a 1inch drain and a 3/4 inch return. My barracuda pump is fitted with a 1.5 inch inlet and outlet. I have been told that going from the pump at 1.5 to the 180 return at 3/4inch will put a significant amount of presure on the joints.

I have considdered redrilling the 180 for a 2inch drain and a 1.5inch return, but I have been told that there is a good possibility that I could shadder the tank. I don't want this.

So, unless someone has a good idea/suggestion, I may have to sell my current AGA 180 for a custom drilled Perfecto 180. If this is my only option, I will be posting my current tank and old stand on here for sale for $400.

Please let me know if you have suggestions.

Thanks

Yeah, there's no way you can run a barracuda on bulkheads that small ;)

Is the bottom drilled, or the back/sides? If it's the bottom (which is likely tempered), then yeah, you can't re-drill it. If it's the back/side that's drilled (not likely tempered), then yes, you can certainly re-drill it.
