180 relocation project

On your next one, put a 1/4" tab on the bottom of the wide part of the piece that looks like a chinamans hat. When you bend that tab, it should help keep that part straight.

Here is what I just got done doing. About half and half.

Tim do you guys do metal polishing or just fabrication> Just wanting some advice on what speed, material to use.

Unless it's flat you're going to have to get after it with a buffing wheel mounted in a drill with some rouge.
You can always have it chemically, or electro polished if you have the $$$$$$.

You know I agree with chris. I think you have galvanized steel there. I've worked with metal for over 25 years and never seen aluminum look like that. It is just a picture though.

You can take a scrap piece and and put it in a bucket of water for awhile and see if it rusts.

You can also use a palm sander with fine grit paper and take out the rough surface before you build another one, that would make it polish a lot easier.

I am using a rotozip with a small buffing whell on it. I htink I will have to go to Harbor Freight and pick up some more. Are there more then on kind of rouge? And what is good for polishing this stuff?

You got the right stuff, you're just working harder at it because of the rough surface. If you sand the next one you will notice a big difference. I'd maybe start with a 120 then 180 then 220 the something in the 300 range. Harbor Freight has a lot of different sand paper there cheeper than you can find it most places.

Yeah flashing is'nt alum. It's galvanized, easy to bend though.
I don't think you'll get the mirror finish you want out of it. You can go to western scrap and get sheet aluminum pretty cheap and try that once you get it mastered. In fact when they build these they use a special aluminum known for the highest reflection quality, so i do think it is part of the whole reason they work well, not just the angles.
I think its cool though how a guy can build his own!!!!I think you'll be cheating yourself out of some light....................dang it we need to get that PAR meter ordered!!!!!!!! fast that would be so useful here!

When is that club meter coming in guys?

I don't think I will be cheating myself out of light. lol Have you seen what I have now??? Do they sell it by the sheet? Russ was telling me about the solar tube. I am probably going to use that.

Do you think I should build two and hang them for now? I now this is still better then what I have now. I have seen some reflectors that are not very "shiney". Like the Hammertone ones.

Once you got this mastered, it would be a cool club project. We got the dimensions for a 18.5"x18.5" for bigger tanks and the 14"x14" minis for smaller ones.
