180g fish list, what is your advice?

I just set up a 180 gallon a week ago and I am beginning to plan on what fish I am going to add. please help me make some corrections if needed.

My tank is a 180 cube (48"x48"x17") with a 30g sump and 40g refugium. The overflow is in the center with 200lbs of liverock around it. It will be a mixed reef with mostly softies, mushrooms, and polyps.

here is my list in the order I am going to add them over a long period of time.

1. 2 Clowns
2. Foxface
3. 6 line wrasse
4. Tail spot blenny
5. Yellow headed sleeper goby
6. green clown goby
7. Yellow Tang
8. Blue Tang
9. Naso Tang
10. Mandrin Goby
11. Flame Angel or coral beauty
12. pinkface wrasse (border line reef safe)

I really wanted to delete a couple tangs and do a Emperor Angel, but due to the setup being a mixed reef Id rather not worry about a fish eating my corals.

Overall I like the list, at some point the naso may get too big but you should have a good few years before that is something you need to act on. I would have a pair of mandarins as you should have plenty of pods in a 180 with a refugium and they are relatively shy fish, so having 2 will double your chance of seeing one out and about. You may have some issues with a pygmy angel and polyps as they can be hit and miss in a reef setup.

delete a couple of tangs and add an emperor, angels are worth the risk imo.

From my experience, my asfur angel has not touched any softy coral, so maybe that might be worth considering.

I like the angel idea and the mandrin idea. heres the modified list-

1. 2 Clowns
2. Foxface
3. 6 line wrasse
4. Tail spot blenny
5. Yellow headed sleeper goby
6. green clown goby
7. Yellow Tang
8. Emperor Angel
9. Blue Tang
10. Mandrin Goby pair
11. Flame Angel or coral beauty
12. pinkface wrasse (border line reef safe)

Fish total 14

My next question is- should I delete the pygmy angel or will it be fine with the larger angel? Any more suggestions are appreciated, and should I add anything else?

A1 choice with the pair of mandarins - just be 100% that they are a pair as two males will fight to the death. Wait 6 months or until you pod population has exploded to support them.

I would not put in the 6 line ... 6 line will eat the same pods that the mandarins need. They also can get pretty dominant so adding any other wrasses could be very hard. If you have to have a wrasse, instead of the 6 line .. consider a yellow banana wrasse as it is very active and ... of course yellow. It will eat the pods as well ... but not as much as a pig as the 6 line and not as aggressive.

Reconsider the yellow tang ... can be jerks when they are the dominant tang ... consider a chocolate or mimic tang (Acanthurus pyroferus). Wait however until the tank gets a little bit more mature as they do better with algae and need it in their diet to do well.

Dwarf Angels ... consider a small group of 2-3 cherub angels (Centropyge argi). They are very active and quite beautiful. The eventually larger emperor will basically ignore them. Less likely in my view to bother your corals than the flames. With the dwarfs ... do some research of the ones that you like .. but consider a group of them. Search youtube ... there are lots to see. There are also many posts on RC ... to help with a species.

Yellowheaded Sleeper Goby get quite large and are sand sifters thus require a fine sand bottom (you did not specify your substrate). They can be a good or bad thing ... depending on your layout ... as they can cause quite a sand storm. There are some alternative sand sifting goby species and I have not done enough research on them ... maybe someone else can chime in.

Best advice ... decide on the must have fish first ... then work around them. Write down your list ... then leave it for a few weeks and then go back and look it over. I know I have changed my mind quite a few times (like 10) and I am still in the process (one advantage of having a slow build).

Good Luck.

Cheers,
Bruce

Personally I would skip the Emperor angel -- for a 4' by 4' tank that just won't give it enough room.

Yea it could be border line, but I was thinking that if the fish swam around the center it would have a lot of room to swim. In a standard 180 I would agree because the fish can only go back and fourth.

I will have to keep thinking I guess. I never have heard of a group of cheribs so that is interesting. I will do some searching.
