Is this to much light for a 158 gal tank. How far off the water surface should I mount these in a canopy?

Yes, no, or maybe ;) Somewhere between 6" and 24" ;)

Wattage/bulb wise, it completely depends on what you're planning to keep and what the dimensions of the tank are (158g doesn't tell us much). General rule is 24" or less, you can keep anything including SPS. 24" or deeper (especially SPS), then 400's are good. You'll find a lot of SPS guys with 400's on smaller and shallower tanks however.

Height wise, it's heavily dependent on the reflector. A crappy batwing should be mounted low, where as other reflectors have specific good areas. My LumenMax2's work well at about 12-14" for a 24-36" wise spread for example. LumenBrights actually work better mounted high (see the long thread here).

You get the idea. In short, supply some details or you're get a huge range of worthless answers that may not be applicable to your situation.

Sorry for the lack of info. The 156 gal not 158 is 60.5"Lx24.5"Wx25"H. I will primarily be keeping SPS and don't want to cook them to much. What is a good distance from the water surface to keep these.

Thanks
