I just got a 2.5 gallon tank from a friend.i let it sit for a bout a week with some live rock in it then i put my chromis in and it died in a couple of days. but he was fine in my 10 gallon. i have a 50 watt heater in there( on VERY low) do you think he died becuase the water got to cold at night? Also i was thinking of purchasing either a 13 watt power compact light OR a 12 " fixture with a 20 watt bulb. What lighting do you think i should do? ALSO will it get to hot having it on? and if it does what should i do for it getting to hot.
Thanks in advance
Tony
P.S sorry for all the questions just have a lot to ask

WOW. Sounds like you need to do some reading. Your tank wasn't done cycling, that's why your fish died. More than likely you had ammonia in the tank, which is deadly to fish. You're not using a thermometer? Dang, please get one. And maybe a basic test kit as well. Don't put any fish in there until there is no detectable ammonia or nitrate.....and even then some will tell you no fish should be in a 2.5G except for maybe a very small goby. A 13W PC will work fine for that tank, depending on what you want to keep. Buy a mushroom in a month or two, and see how it does. STABILITY is the key here. Read up and good luck Tony.

Kind of going off what Mike said....

When yoru cycle occurs (usually when you start a new tank) you will have ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. In that order also. Some tanks can take weeks even a month or so to cycle.... some tanks may only teake a week.

It depends on your water, new rocks, sometimes sand. Go out and buy a liquid test kit. Test for those three things. Once all three are at zero, it is usually safe to add some clean up critters like snails and hermits and maybe a shrimp.

Do buy a thermometer and check the temp in the tank. The temperature should be, or atleast usually is, around 78-80.

Good luck, and keep asking questions.... it's a good way to learn.

Ya know, after a good nights sleep, I read my post again, and it seems I was a little harsh IMO. You can not show emotion or facial expressions on the internet, and I didn't mean to sound rude, THAT'S NOT MY STYLE, just wanted to help you out.

Where you at Tony? Let us know how things are going, a lot of people here are willing to help.

tony lives in west hartford with me, tony if you want help ask me or andrew

our tanks got started after only a week, becasue we used water and substrate from other tanks, you also do need a test kit, i have an old PH/alk one if you want

Yeah i need some help with it right now it is just sitting witha filter and a heater any help is awesoem!

I ran one of these as a zoanthid and softy reef. I put a Jalli 13W pc lamp on it, it sat right in the rim. I ran a little hang on back aquaclear or penguin filter (don't recall which brand), I had to modify the intake (I chopped off a couple inches.)

I was able to keep lots of coral and such in here. I wouldn't recommend fish, really. Maybe a small anemone shrimp or something. You must be dilligent about top off on this tank. And, if you feed, you need to do water changes weekly (i'd say around 3/4 of a gallon.) I didn't have fish in it, so mine was quite stable. I think I had a 50 or 25w visitherm (whatever the smallest visitherm is.)

hth,
Angela

how can i get more water in there like with filters and stuff.

Get the biggest HOB filter you can fit but cut back on the flow and you will have more water volume.

btw--I just start a 3g marineland eclipse3 because I can't find a home for the mantis I found that came with the LRs for the 24gal tank. I took the hood off because the lighting is poor and placed one of those sun light reading lamp that I got from Sam's club for $22 and it's pretty bright and going to use the auto on LED blue night light that I got from Costco for moon light. Also have a 85gph powerhead inside for flow.

Penn Plax Cascade 80 Power Filter 80 G.P.H.: $9.99
Tetra Whisper Power Filter 10 Sale! Now only: $9.99
Aquaclear 20 Power Filter: $13.49
(prices quoted are from big Als)

Just check on some of the e-tailers online to get the measurements and the power filter to match the length of your tank and bigalsonline.com usually have very competitive prices. The bigger the filter the chances it may be too strong and you need to slow down the flow (bring the flow to the lowest and you may still need to clip the impeller) and may be you can put 2 pcs of the Poly Bio Pads to cut down the flow and to absorp some of the impurities and phosphates at the same time. Just a thought and I welcome other suggestions as I'll probably do it on my 3gal soon.

definatly go the your lfs and they should be able to test your water for you... I have a 2.5 myself and everything is doing great so just be patient and keep up the good work!
