2 clowns, one not doing well

hey

i have a 12gallon nanocube that's been up for around 3 months and after 2 and half i added 2 true perc clownfish. the lfs owner had these 2 together in a tank and said they were a pair but have never spawned, the female bigger than the male etc.

they've been doing well in my tank up until 3 days ago. the male has been sitting in one spot for most of the time and is constantly breathing heavily. my best guess is 5 breaths per second. he is also not eating.

the other one (female) is doing fine and swimming around normally and eating.

what might this be and how do i go about remedying it?

thanks

12 gallon tank? How big are the clowns?
What kind of surface aggitation do you have in your tank?
I personally would not keep clowns in such a small tank as there is just no room to grow.
Do you do water changes?
Have a skimmer?

Specks on the tank, lights, water.
Pics are helpfull also.

the clowns are about an inch and a half each. i have a maxijet 1200 in my tank that is attached to a hydor flo.

i do weekly water changes of just above 2 gallons, ro/di water. the water change that i did yesterday didn't seem to have any beneficial effect on the fish. i have a fission nanoskimmer that doesn't appear to do much, but yes i do have one.

i don't understand this though, only one of the two clowns is sick.

the clown died. i woke up and found my hairy mushroom closed up into a ball shape and the clown was inside.
