Hello there reef central,
I have been reading information on this site for quite a while prior to starting my own tank. i have a 46 gallon euro tank with a coral life lunar aqualight, 65 gallon coral life skimmer, and 2 425 hydropower heads, heater and thermometer as well.

I started my tank 3 months ago cycling was no problem waited a month then added my first clown once my perams were ok. Since then I added a orange spotted goby rusty angel and a yellow tang a few weeks between each. I just got my light the other day so I decided to pick up some mushroom corals I did some large water changes for the 2 days prior to ensure my nitrate was as low as possible.

I have aquaviros eight-4, calcification and a magnesium supplement, I used the eight -4 because my ph was a little low and supplemented in the calcium and magnesium supplement too. Yesterday my rusty angel died and then my yellow tang died today both had been in there fine for approximately a month. I noticed some brown algae growth on the side of my tank, since im unexperienced i thoughtid mention it though i dont think its whats causing this. Fish all looked healthy regular feeding of algae wafers pellets and brine shrimp, lfs reccomended hakari brand.

Ph-8.0
Ammonia-.25 seems to have spiked since fish died
nitrite-0
nitrate-2.0
Calcium -400

Any help would be more than appreciated I would rather not lose my snowflake clown false percutaneousand orange spotted goby too. If I have not provided sufficient information Iwwould be more than happy to provide more.

Asap 30 per cent water change. Get some seachem prime which will bind the ammonia until water changes can remove it

Do you think that's why my fish died or is it just something I need to do because of where my paras sit. Doing it now.

Sorry for your loss..

How much rock do you have? Was is dry or live rock? What about the sand? When you cycled for 3 months, how did you go about it? Did you see a large spike of ammonia? At least 4ppm is what I'd be looking for to start a good cycle.

Were any of these fish quarantined? What are the dimensions of your tank? A 46 is likely too small for a tang. They are aggressive and even more so with inadequate swimming/grazing room.

The ammonia is likely the result of the fish that have died. I would perform a large water change to reduce the ammonia for the safety of the remaining livestock. Prime can be used as well to mitigate the toxicity of ammonia.

Yeah I saw a large spike of ammonia that nitrite than nitrate I used a cycle aid it said you can put fish in after I a week I of course didn't trust it.I only cycled for one month though was that too short. My fish were not quarantined nor was my mushoot coral that I recently put in. The coral came on live rock from the store the rock was live not dryet for the 50 pounds as well.

You say you have 2 425 Hydropowerheads? Are they Koralia powerheads? If so you going to need bigger ones, they dont provide much flow at all. How did the fish look when they died? Were they gasping for air on the bottom?

And yes they are koala, the guy at my lfs did some calculations then told me 2 of that size would be perfect also how do you feel about the coral life lunar aqualight it's compact. 96 watt 10000 and 96 10000 at nick. Im wondering because I got it recently and could exchange it for a different h.o. light.

I have 2 hydor 850s in my 31 gal QT tank and they don't provide all that much flow. And they were $60 for two. Hope you didn't pay $100 for smaller size of same brand :p. But yeah I think people worried your not getting enough oxygen in your water. O and light really has nothing to do with fish health. Just photosynthetics. So unless your mushroom had something to do with it your lighting should be an issue

The problem of elevated nitrates may be contributed to the substrate. That substrate is very hard to keep clean due to the small shells that collect debris which in turn hold nitrates. can help is you place the power heads low in the tank and point them up.
Fish sometimes die for no apparent reason but always follow a fish death with a 30 percent water change and monitor ammonia and nitrates like you did
Do your fish have any signs of parasites like white spots or cloudy eyes. Was the tang trying to scratch on the substrate or rock?
You should always treat coral before adding it as they can carry parasites into the tank that attack fish
There are so many factors out of your control that kill fish. One of the biggest is if they use cyanide to harvest them. It can cause liver damage which doesn't show up right away but then the fish dies mysteriously in a month or two

cloudy eyes

cloudy eyes

I did notice my tang had cloudy eyes, a few days after I got him. What could that mean is that an infection.
