2 ID's - one red, one green

Just pinched a couple short frags to try propogating at home, but have no ID on either.

First off the pic (with both the red and the green - still clumped together from being just out of the bag)

Now a close-up of the green while it was still in the bag.

The green seems to grow caluerpa-strand-style; one ever-growing runner with a new branch ever couple of inches.

The red seems to grow more plant-style; branches all coming from one centralized root, then an occasional runner to start a new plant. Branches can have sub-branches as well.

That's all I have at the moment, but can certainly answer questions and have access to it now for specific pic requests as well.

I believe that is Red Kelp, im not sure if thats a generic name though. I saw it in calfo and fenner's new book "reef invertabrates". I want some Where did you get it? TELL ME:mad2: .

Got it at the local LFS... and if you remind me in a few weeks (after if grows out a bit - current frag is about 2" across) we'll work out a way to get you a clipping.

Yea that red stuff it really cool. I have seen it at LFS 1 time. Was gona get it untill they told me the price was $50, sorry but i was expecting $5.

Scott, try looking at several photos of Pterocladia on the net, and tell me if it's close to your red

As for the green... I was thinking Chlorocladus or Dasycladus, but something in your description doesn;t sound right. Sure it isn't a Caulerpa? (C. verticillata)

Alright, first the green:

The green algae pictured above is doing well. I can also report that it bleaches at night like Halimeda sp.. In my aquarium it is hugging the rockwork, but doesn't have obviously (visible) roots.

And then the red:

This thing is a pain. It refuses to stay rooted (even though it has obvious roots) and will even 'wiggle' out from under rocks placed to keep it held to the sand. Last I saw it it had been swept behind the rockwork. Good riddance (it'll be back).

Just curious how the red was growing....I am currantly growing several species of caulerpa, halameda, Chaetomorpha and Gracilaria tikvahiae (or red tang heaven I believe),and was curious if you wanted to trade as I love variety.....pm me if interested.

It grows slowly and has a tendency to uproot and drift (behind the rockwork). When the current washes it back out though I'd be happy to put a clipping in an envelope and send it your way.

just a bump... Did you ever find out what the green algea was? I looked up the suggestions and don't think any of them match. Your first photo looks exactly like some stuff I have and am trying to remove...

I have never found an adequate ID for either.

The green has become prolific within my 29g reef, though it is pruned back easily enough (and it is neat).

The red has been behind/under the rockwork since October and was just found (brought forward actually by a burrowing pistol shrimp) about two weeks ago. As soon as I get excited about new growth it breaks off or is eaten...

I'd be more than happy to ship you a handful of the green stuff for comparison.

I would actually be very interested in getting a cutting of the green algae of unknown ID. Perhaps after the holidays we could work out a deal? If you don't mind my asking, what kind of lighting is it under (112w PC?) and what are the nutrient conditions of your water? Do you think it would grow well in my 'fuge with 45w of PC? Attached is a virgin pic of my 'fuge. It now has chaetomorpha and rock rubble.

I'm sure we can "work out a deal." Monday I'll throw some in my trade-thermos with a couple heat-packs in the box and send it your way.

It is growing under 112w of PC at the bottom ot the 29g tank. It is a rooting plant, though its roots are short, so IME will great on your rubble yard.
