2 lbs per Gallon?!

2 lbs per gallon is a lot isn't it? Most references I have seen recommend 1-2 lbs per gallon, but the current trend is for going with the lower end of the range, like 1-1.5 lbs per gallon.

Can one get less than 2 lbs per gallon with the package, or what is recommended? I like the more open look without the tank being jam packed with live rock.

Order a smaller package :)

Or buy the package and sell some of the LR to someone else locally. I'm sure folks would jump at the chance to buy some from you. Keep in mind though that TBS aquacultured rock is much more dense than fiji and most other LR you find in the LFS.

Yes, the denisty of TBS rock is higher than others, and so 2 lbs per gallon will not fill up my tank as much as less dense rock at 2 lbs/gallon.

I terms of the type of reef I am aiming for, please give me some ideas. How would the amount of rock significanlty affect the type of reef I am building.

I'm not sure what this "using less rock" trend is you are talking about.

But anyhow, honestly I would talk to Richard at TBS directly. He is always willing to help and can probably work with you to get you exactly the rocks you need to create the look you want.

For what it's worth, I ordered the 100 gal package for my 100 gallon tank, and over the last couple of years I've pulled out at least 50 lbs of rock trying to get my aquascaping the way I wanted it. The full 200 lbs was simply too much.

Of course, I have no idea if I got exactly 200 lbs of rock to begin with. He may have sent 250 lbs for all I know. Not sure how closely they weigh it.

I ordered 100lbs.. and for sure Richard gave more that that.. Even though the 2lbs per gallon rule is what some people observe. I went with the 100lbs of live rock and the rest base rock which will turn into LR seeded by the TBS rock. It was a cheaper way to go with bigger tanks needing more rock.
