2 new clams and problems already

down&dirty

I recently bought two new crocera clams and I am already encountering problems. I think so anyway. The clams appear to be healthy by looking at the mantle, but they don't seem to ever close their shells anymore. I have them sitting under a 250 watt MH 10k bulb 18 inches deep. My Ph is dead on 8.2, salt is good, calc is 430. I am not sure why they would look so good on the top and yet still seem to be doing bad on the shell side. Please help me get them happy so that I don't have to donate them to another tank to keep them alive.

they dont always close up.i take mine out of the tank once a week to inspect them and they dont always close up.

Clams look VERY different when viewed from the side as opposed to from above. I'm still not sure what the actual problem is (clams don't always close up fully....mine never seemed to...wide open in the day and slightly open during the night.

Does the mantle ust look different from the side?

Actually, the mantle has always looked different on the sides. I will try to get pictures tomorrow and post them in the morning. My camera is at home and the tank is in my office. I feed the tank DT's every three days to help the clams out.

My large maxima is open most of the time. Even when he arrived in the shipping bag (coming all the way from California) in June of last year, he was wide open with his mantle all the way out. When I pull him out of the tank to check him over, he remains open.
