i have two questions for you all. 1. have you all heard of the compact fl lighithing retrofit for the eclipse hoods? do we have to worry about heat issues or is that all gonna be about the same as it is now? 2. i was thinking of adding a little "clown fish" to the tank pros cons? do it or dont do it? i only have corals and inverts in there now and possibly a mantis but it doenst seem to be bothering too much asides from blue legged hermits. thanks again y'all

What size is you Eclipse? SunPaq did/does make a 32 watt retro for an Eclipse tank but I don't remember what size tank it was. The PC will add more heat then standard fluorescent.

its the one hat has the twin 18" bulbs for a 10 gallon tank so i think its the eclipse 1 twin light. which i run a 420 nm actinic and a 10k bulb. i found the retro kit on a website tonight goofing round. i was told i could keep a small clam with that lighting is that ture? is the increase in heat gonna be that significant to worry about or?

I can't tell you about heat with an eclipse system, but I can tell you that keeping a clam is a very bad idea. While saying that you could keep a small clam is not entirely false, one must know a little about clams to know why. Small clams (under ~2 1/4") are mostly filter feeders, thus they can be kept in less intense light with less of a negative impact, but once clams are over that 2 1/4" mark they get nearly all of their food from the zooanthanelle that hosts in their mantle (the colored part). They require very intense (metal halide) lighting to live more than a short period of time in captivity....

For a clam you would need MH or T5's for it to be healthy. But, some have been able to keep them under a lot of PC light.
As for the heat, that probably will not be that much of a problem. With summer coming you would want to have your tank in a room with AC though.
