here is what you should do:
1)put both in a 10G qt tank
2)take pictures
3)post pictures on RC
4)sit back and watch the chaos

The fish will get along if their needs are met.
Meeting their needs is the hard part. They will require a lot of food, places to feel safe and room to swim. As they grow (and they will grow fast), they will get more agressive because their needs aren't being met anymore and you will have to move them on to bigger homes. You must be willing to do the best thing for the fish to give them a part time home. If you aren't willing to give them away go a bigger home (for free if necessary), then don't get them and choose a fish that will live it's entire life in your tank. The fish's needs must come first.

jda- I just had to part with my 8-9" sohal tang and basicly gave him away I do know how it is he grew 3" a year and I got him at 2"
anyway I want to restock my 125reef once I trade in my pink tail trigger and the tangs will be the largest fish in the tank the others will be purple firefish black saddle back clowns starry blenny a splendid dottyback and mabe a hawiian cleaner wrasse

I've had 2 desjardinii tangs on two different occasions. The first was a model citizen, he didn't let anyone mess with him but he wasn't aggressive at all.
The second was a real SOB
He didn't like other tangs, he didn't even care for centropyge angels...not sure why that was.
In general though, I'm not sure why anyone would say the purple was a better choice unless it is because of size. They're pretty widely known to be one of the more aggressive zebrasoma tangs, whereas in general, most of the experiences with desjardinii that I've read have tended towards them being more mellow, like my first one.
