2 unexplained deaths within a month?

Prior to this month, It has been quite some time since I have lost any fish. At least a year or two. well, I take that back. I did lose 1 of my 8 chromis sometime over the last couple of months, but I dont put much stock into that, I have had those 8 chromis for about a year and half, and I was shocked that none of them had actually disappeared yet.

However, in the last month or so I am seeing a very disturbing trend.

Right after Christmas, my C. Adornatis started acting very strange, he was laying around and not very active at all. that lasted a few days, and then he died. He did not have any open lession, no spots, or any other visual signs. His only symptoms was listless, and somewhat labored breathing. I had him for almost 2 years, and the previous owner had him for about a year before that.

In the last several weeks, one of my chromis has lost an incredible amount of weight. At first i though the group was picking him off, but he is not really being bothered by the other chromis, and he is eating. although, clearly still losing weight. My gut tells me interal parasite, but I cant catch the little bugger. I fully expect him to pass any day

Then suddenly out of nowhere I lost my Red scooter blenny today. I have had him in the tank for probably a year and half, and he ate well. he would eat mysis, loved rods food, pellets, and of course pods. In less than 24hrs he went from perfectly normal to laying on the bottom, not moving and labored breathing. I did manage to grab him, and do a fresh water dip thinking gill flukes. but after a 8min fresh water dip, in a black cup, not a single fluke was found. He was not skinny, was not bloated, showed no visible defects.

Also worth mentioning I have also noticed some new wound type spots on my percula, I have had him for almost 14yrs, and from time to time he shows various signs on his body. At first I assumed him and the Kole had been fighting it out over the territory they both want, but now I am questioning something else.

Per the sticky, here are the specs requested:

1. How old is this aquarium? 2.5yrs

2. If less than six months old, what is ammonia level?

3. What is SG of this aquarium? How measured?1.025 via refractometer

4. When was the last fish added to this aquarium?prior to last week, I dont even remember, sometime last spring?

5. Was it quarantined? If so, how? And how long? Was it prophylactically treated? How? The last additions were in QT for about 2 weeks, treated with prazipro only

6. If you are using a copper based medication, which one? How often do you measure level? When?

7. If you are using hyposalinity, how did you calibrate your refractometer?

8. Please describe in detail, the appearance of the fish? If there is one or more pimples, are they lumpy? What color?see above the 2 fish that died exhibited no physical signs

9. Please describe the behavior of the fish as best you can. Is it acting reclusive? Is it always up towards the top of the aquarium? Is it avoiding light? How active is the fish?see description above

10. Is the fish eating? What? eating fine, then quickly downturn, not eating the last day or so before death

If you could copy and paste this in your post filling in whatever answers you can, it would help us greatly and speed up our ability to answer. Thanks in advance!!

Based on the symptoms, it sounds like internal worms may be possible; Prazipro would be my recommendation.

Thanks Steve, that reinforces what I have been thinking.

Would you recommend treating the entire tank with Prazipro? Its a 220g system, and I have clams, starfish, shrimp and things of that nature.

I seem to be reading mixed opinions on prazipro and the treating the display tank

It will kill worms (some beneficial ones like father dusters and bristleworms). The downside to this is if you have a lot of worms that you do not know about, you may cause an ammonia spike. However, the vast majority of folks do treat the display tank; preferred method is to treat all introductions before they reach the display tank.

Sorry to hear about the deaths, MC-CRO. That's really awful especially given how long you've had the fish. Did you treat the entire tank? If you did, how did the inverts take it? Did the starfish survive too? What kind of starfish?
Good luck. Hope you don't have any more losses.

I held my breath and dosed the recommended amount of prazi this afternoon. so far, some of the LPS corals are little upset, but nothing too bad, they still took their saturday night feeding after lights out. the blue linkia looks okay. I also noticed that the bangaii now seems to have a white growth on one of its gills, so something is definately happening in the tank.

The chromi I described ealrier died during the night. I fully expected it, but man is this a kick in the gut. I have lost a fish or two over the years, but this is starting to really worry me, as I have never lost this many fish in a year, much less a month.

dead:
2 chromi's
1 wrasse
1 scooter blenny

fish with visual signs:

1 large bangaii with a white growth under gill plate
1 large perc with some type of lession or spots on sides.
1 chromi suddenly acting funny laying at perimeter of tank since yesterday
1 chromi with an abrasion on his side (looks like he got in a fight with someone-)

Google Uronema marinum to see if the description matches what you are seeing. Very commonly brought in on chromis in recent years.

I googled it. there are some symptoms that could be ulronema marinum, but other dont fit. god, I hope thats not it, the quick reading I did sounds like a death warrent to a fully established reef tank.

the chromis that has a skin lession really doesnt look like the pictures. My chromi has a definitive edge on the wound, and it literally showed up one day. I tend to think it was physical contact with someone, I even entertained he got into the power head (vortech) when it was off at feeding time, and it turned back on. I could be wrong though, I noticed late last night that the wound is starting to look a little fuzzy

the other chromi is not producing slime, is not discolored, has no outward physical signs, just suddenly decided he wanted to stay in the bottom corner of the tank.

the clown fish does not look like the pictures at all, he has more of what looks like a very light localized swelling. almost like if you scraped your hand, and it barely broke the skin, but was irrated and slightly puffy. None of the fish are producing excess mucus or discolorations

the bangaii exhibited a white growth in his gill once before, a couple of months ago. I tried to catch the fish for several days to no avail, and mysterously the growth went away and he was fine. I just noticed yesterday that his gill plate was cocked a little bit, and when he turned, I saw that the growth was back. This fish is not exhibiting any other signs that I recognize. He swims fine, eats fine- biggest pig in the tank, no discoloration, no skin spots.
