2 weird pests

Hello everyone.

I was looking at my tank today when i found a weird looking creature. I also noticed i have Aiptasia (i think). I need help in figuring out what these thing are.

So that thing in my rock is a pineapple sponge, any idea how it got there?

The sponges come with live rock coral substrates or even frag plugs. They are actually something good that you may want in your tank.

The aptasia in the second picture is the thing of concern as it may multiply quickly and take over the tank.

Okau thats good. And do you have a prefered way of getting rid of aiptasia? I know there are tons upon tons of ways but i need to know the best one.

If it is just one you could just boil it out: get some boiling water and a 6 mm / 1/4" air hose and siphon the hot water into the hole where the aptasia sits.

Another option, especially if you suspect that there are more, would be peppermint shrimps. I had pretty good success with them.

The problem is that the aiptasia is on a frag that has a colony of zoas close by and a mushroom so wouldnt that hurt the corals? And i have small 8.5 gal tank with a 1 clown and a 3 cm slug in it. If i asd the shrimp will it be too much livestock?

If you can remove the frag, you could just scrape the aptasia out of the hole and then fill the hole with some superglue to make sure nothing is left behind to regrow another one.
After cleaning the hole and before sealing it up you may want to rinse the frag well to remove all loose aptasia tissue.

A few peppermint shrimp destroyed aptasia for me. They never came back. Good cheap way to go about it.

I inject with calcium but others have said it makes them multiply. The last one I had was on a small rock I just removed from the water, propane torch, rinse and back in

I like to get them with a dremel. Drill the little sucker to smithereens and rinse.
