The ballast does not get that hot but the bulbs do. I could never control the temp of my tank and went back to VHO. Actually used it for about 9 months.

LOL, the bulbs are worth at least half of that, add the reflector and there is $150.

$300 is a very fair price! I would purchase if I had a need for that fixture. At current I do not.

Well Offer him $250 or $275, maybe he will do that. LOL Maybe you have something he wants to trade you. If you really want something wheel and deal. Thats how I ended up with my equipment.

I traded a sea swirl for a reeflo dart this past week. He really wanted a sea swirl, I really wanted a dart. Both of which we had laying around, and we made it happen.
