2 Years in the making: Blue Zoos!

For the longest time I couldn't get these guys to turn blue, and finally after moving the colony to a shaded area on the bottom of my grow tank under a Radium bulb they are finally turning navy blue. I think I'm in love :D

Has anyone else had success with zoos like these, and if so what's your setup like?

Fraggin'

Fraggin'

I'm a big believer in share and share alike so I'll definitely be fraggin', but I've never fragged zoos before so I need to do some homework. In the meantime I ordered some discs and put several pieces of 1 inch rubble around the colony. Hopefully I'll have lots to share soon. The colony is 9 to 10 inches across now and starting to spread rapidly so I expect to have lots of mini-colonies in a few short weeks. My biggest concern is that they won't hold their color well in other tanks. I've found a couple articles that talk about how Blue Zoos of Pacific origin can be tough to keep colorful. Maybe I'll send out a few free samples first to see how they do in other tanks ;)

Keep me in mind if you do the free samples! Maybe we can do a trade when the time comes. Keep in touch!

did i hear free samples?

haha, pm me if that really happens.

specs: 45 gal, 400 watt hamiliton halide and 20k bulb.
[just incase you try to send samples to tanks of different natures]

Do Zoos require flow? I'm just curious as at the bottom of the tank they do not get much flow. All my flow is high up with my SPS. I've noticed that my zoos do better with some decent flow. Let me know if that is your experience.

Blue zoas are definately bluer, lower in the tank. My Tubb's blues turned green up high.

Do your Tubb's blue zoas grow slowly?
Mine seem to grow/reproduce very slow. I have some African blues, which also sit on the bottom about 7-8" from the Tubb's and they grow much faster.

I do but never see them eat like my palys. I think when I squirt food tat the zoas, they close because they are irritated--never stay closed to "swallow", like my palys.

I don't physically see them eat, but they retract ever so slightly, I'm assuming something is getting in there.
Prior to spot feeding the growth was very slow, like 3 polyps in almost a year. With regular spot feeding I've gotten 3 polyps within 1-2 months.

my tubs turned purple at the top of my tank...and they are growing about 1-2 polyps a month..completely depends on the size of the frag though...the bigger the frag the faster they seem to grow..since there is 50 polyps producing 1 polyp a month as opposed to 10...either way though they seem to gro 1-2 polyps a months..
