200 gallon deep dimension build

Day 0 - the morning before I started treatment. This is when I accepted that my problem was AEFW.

Therman's rainbow. Clearly not a rainbow. Note eggs underneath frag at the plug

PC rainbow. Again, not a rainbow. Bite marks on the underside of coral near the base.

Day 1 - about 24h after treatment

Day 2 -

It's been 3 days since I nuked my tank for better or worse. Since then I have changed a total of 125 gallons (30, 25, 30, and 40 gallons). I lost my 6 line wrasse early on in the process. The snails went hiding during the treatment, but started roaming the tank again last night. RBTA is still alive. I lost 1 small coral that was already on its way out and 2 others that weren't looking great before the treatment are holding on for life. Its too early to tell on the coral that had eggs at the base of it. My PC rainbow colony that I'm taking photos of does not appear to have any more bite marks on it than 3 days ago. I am starting to see hints of polyp extension on some corals that haven't had PE in a long time.

Proving once again you can't kill RBTAs!

Good news:
- corals that were heavily attacked do not look any worse and have a bit more PE
- a coral that I thought I had lost with the last treatment has 1 polyp and a bit of tissue that has been holding strong

Bad news:
- this treatment probably doesn't affect eggs...I saw some creepy crawlies moving around the base of the thermans (Above) where the eggs are.

Plan:
- retreat today to wipe out any of these buggers that have hatched. Retreat again next week and then again in 2 weeks.

I'll try and find the thread in the life cycle but I'm confident that you need to treat every 8 days or less to break the chain.

Since the last treatment I have seen significant improvement in coral colors and polyp extension. I am noticing corals encrusting much faster as well. I'm really happy with how this turned out. I'm debating on the 3rd treatment. Not sure if I want to press my luck one way or the other. I did end up losing most of my snails with the second treatment.

On a side note, I found a coral dip product that uses "potassium salts". If anyone ever wants to buy a dip in bulk, this may be your product. I still have 32# left and plan to implement it as one of my dip stations for any incoming corals now.

I had a thought about this today. Using standard dip method you may be right, but with the kcl method, i think that goes put the window since the treatment is therapeutic in the water for a longer time. Eggs that hatch during that time should die. Eggs that hatch after so many water changes will require another dose though.

Anyone have aefw and want to perform an experiment? I'll send you the salt. Experiment would be in a bucket so no ill effects to your tank inhabitants.

That's an interesting theory. I hope this takes off and is the wave of the future with treating these little bastards.

Well third treatment today. Again, at about 80% of the solution in the tank, things started dying in the tank. I'd say 99% of the stuff that I saw floating around looked like young bristleworms. I saw 1 tiny FW on the glass before treating and it eventually flew off the glass. Overall, the size of the things dying in the tank have gotten smaller and smaller with each treatment. I think this will be it for treatments. Time to get all the potassium cleared out of the tank this week and then repopulate pods and CUC.

You might want to add some bacteria. I like microbacter7. Zeostones also strip the water of potassium if you can't get it down to the level you want.

Sounds like chemotherapy! Wonder if the cure is worse than the disease?

The disease is definitely worse.
The tank had 66 SPS in it before all this started.
I lost 6 to AEFW before I knew what was going on
I lost 1 during treatment
There are 3-4 that got burnt up during treatment, but are still alive and I am hopeful for a recovery. There is 1 that probably won't make it though just because of how much was lost during the treatment.

The SPS that weren't affected by treatment have better colors and PE now.

Pife, Regarding cycle, I checked labs last week and the big 3 (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) were running 0's. I have some Fritz zyme on hand if I need it, but I'm hoping not. With all the water changes, things seem to be in check thus far.
