$200, my day off, and my new diy calcium reactor!

I broke down and bought a big ca reactor from a local acrylics guy here in town - he is awesome... The reactor will easily handle a 300 gal system so once the new controller and regulator are in, I'll post some pics, pretty sweet. Its 30" tall if anyone was wondering.

Do you know if this modification will affect the water output of the pump? Im sure it would cut down the output.

Hardly really..On my DIY Euro-Reef I have a Hagen 802? (400GPH) w/ the bioball mod. It cut the bubbles much finer but had the same intensity IMO as it before the mod (just the impeller chopping bubbles).Regardless, anytime you add air in a venturi to a pump it does tend to decrease the max output (vs. just water) but we would be doing it anyway to cut up the C02, this is just super efficient way to do so. My only beef w/ the idea is it may be TOO efficient, and may cause some bubbles to come out the effluent but I'm pretty sure that could be easily fixed, not to mention having to turn the BPM rate and effluent drip ;). Who'd want that?:D

Yes, the noise of the pump is annoying. Anyone knows where to get this bioball needle wheel?

Lol...get a bioball cut it up until it is fitting in your impeller housing of your choice pump. Its DIY man!!:smokin: , youve got to do it yourself!

On the same note....

I would encourage anyone to do this little trick as in the case w/ most impellers you wont have to do irrepairable damage to the original impeller.

Cut the Bioball down to size and usually just placing on top of the impeller w/ some pressure and a dab or two of crazy glue, it'll be secure to give it a go. If you like it, then you just made your life a bit less noisy and gave your new DIY CR a new bell and whistle. If you don't like for any reason, open it back up and slip it off.

I don't have my own DIY CR yet, so I can't try it out per se but if my train of thought is correct you will end up happy and a slightly enibriated (thanks to a heine or 2) during this tiny mod.

And again a big thank you to Wmtasker for this easy and show-worthy (think vs. embarassing acrylic joints and leaks) DIY CR. IMO you just knocked DJ88 from DIY CR King easily for ease of assembly alone.

Thanks DRZL-Sauras. Im going to try the bioball modification. I just have to find the time to tinker around. I would love to make this QuitOne Pump quit :)

It's going to take more than that to make a "Quiet" One quiet. Those things suck.

elephen, why did you end up buying a reactor? Was this one not working out for you?

In a way yes, I had over 250 gallons of water volume and it didn't seem like it was adequately maintaining the Ca levels - plus I was setting up a tank at my girlfriend's mothers house and I figured I would use the smaller DIY one on that 110 gallon reef, a good to buy myself something something a little bigger and better. The girlfriend didn't think of it that way but I guess its a male thing.

So it is still being run, but on a much smaller and premature system where the calcium consumption is much lower - there probably will only be a handful of small SPS in the 110, mostly softies, zoos and lps.

IMO best DIY reactor out there though, definately better then DJ88 reactor.

I've gotta build one as soon as I get some money. I'm currently dripping a gallon of kalk a day PLUS adding 70 ml's of B-ionic a day. The total water volume of this system is only around 55 gallons, so that's a ton of alk and calcium going into this tank a day. I'm having a hard time keeping up,a nd it's a MASSIVE PAIN to do so.

I know that, I think that's more of a "guidline" though. :D Randy from the chemistry forum says it's not a major problem.

I have 8 SPS, two digitata's, four millepora's, one cap, and a green slimer. All very fast growers. I also have a crocea clam, various LPS, and a lot of coralline.
