"2002 Skimmer Pump" useful?

I located a used Tunze 2002 pump, which is being advertised as "skimmer pump, can also be used as a powerhead". I am tempted to purchase it for my nano which has problems with overheating, especially since the price is very good compared to a new 2002.

The seller informed me that the pump's performance is somewhat lower that of the classic 2002 due to different intake tube. He also said that the speed of the pump cannot be controlled electronically (i.e., with an external controller).

Is this true? Speed control would be cool to have and without it I might rather get a "real" 2002. Any other issues with this particular pump that one should be careful about? I am otherwise aware of the maintenance requirements of 2002/4002 series pumps.

The skimmer pump would need about $50 worth of parts to be a 2002, it had a completely different impeller system that really is high pressure for a venturi and not designed for circulation, you may have to spend $100 to get the pump back to relaible operating condition after new bearings and a repair kit is added to the cost of changing the impeller system. It should be controllable but you would need the 708/2 controller to do so.

Thanks for the exhaustive reply, Roger. If I add that up, I already get within 25% of the price of the brand new Classic 2002 pump, so I guess it is not worth the trouble.
