200G Seaclear 2 8' foot mixed reef build

Wait, I just picked up on this, and the first post said future coral growth... I thought it was illegal to own corals in Hawaii unless you had some super hard to obtain research permits? (or does the HI stand for someplace else)

That said, very nice tank so far :)

I don't know man, I've seen people having their own aquariums with fish they catch in HI, that live in HI and here in the mainland.

But that's just fish.

Yes fish are ok, but corals I thought were major taboo no collection, no importing, but whatever man not like I'm HPD :D

Corals and inverts are prohibited to import here unless a special use permit is granted. There are some fish collection restrictions for aquarium use as well. Fortunately we have some inverts easily accessible (local beach). As for corals, it is my understanding that u can collect corals that have washed on shore. After large swells I have seen corals "fragged" by Mother Nature and wash up on the beach. There are also a few lone soles who have frags available. LPS are going to be the biggest challenge since there are very few that naturally grow here. It never ceases to amaze me how I live in a place with so much natural wealth but yet seem so restricted. The state is worried about invasive species but big cooperations have for decades been completely desomating the reefs here with their chemicals and no accountability. Maybe that should be reserved for another thread!?! Haha.

Hey it's your thread preach on if you want :D

But that's interesting that the "if it's washed ashore" claim, sounds like as long as you don't get caught getting it from the reefs it must have washed ashore! I've heard non-reef building corals are ok to collect (zoanthids), although that could be outdated.

And yeah I know what you mean, here in California there are all sorts of "invasive species" laws involving everything from caulerpa to water hyachinth, but feel free to bring in any plant that is non-native easily purchased at Home Depot!

Great looking build. I thought 8x2x2 was 240g? A friend of mine want to give me one. I have a 4x2x2 120g.

The true reality is that... whose gonna spend "X" amount of dollars to buy and ship an imported coral here and then try to probogate it on a dying reef? Even if u were to dump it from a crashed tank, what's the probability of it surviving when endigonis species are dying prolifically. Multiple times a week I see guys wearing full chemical suits and masks spraying fertilizers and pesticides on ocean front golf courses that have streams that run directly to the channels leading to reefs. The streams have nasty red slime algae growing and are super gross. Mixed priorities by this state!!! Sorry for the rant but it really burns me.

The problem may not be SPS or lps, but imagine if Xenia, gsp or red bugs got loose in the ecosystem. I remember reading an article where a guy planted Xenia on a South American reef or somewhere and it took over completely.
