Clown tangs are tough to keep and usually don't make it, they can also be very aggressive too.

To keep Mandarin you need a good pod population otherwise they're no going to make it, even though there is a chance you can get to them to eat some thing else.

Regal angels are also tough to keep as they don't always eat and when they do it's usually not enough to keep them alive. They're also pretty shy so you need to be careful with what other fish you place with them. They do better in a reef type tank.

Cooperband butterfly are also tough to keep as they don't always eat and don't have a good track record.

In the whole you have pick a # of fish that are tough to keep because of what they eat, or don't eat, and usually do better in an estblished reef tank, if that.

in your case i woudl add the ventralis first and then wait about a month or so for them to get comfortable in the tank and then add your next order of fish. I would add yoru tangs last, especially the clown tang he will become belligerent as he gets more comfortable.

The ventralis anthias are a very sensitive deepwater species. They take alot of care to keep them alive, even in tanks set up especially for them. They just wouldn't mix with the large fish you want. Regal angels also tend to be hard to keep, but they are a much better choice than the ventralis. If you added it before the tangs it would have a better chance of acclimating. I would definitely try it. I really like fairy wrasses, so if you haven't looked into them yet I would highly recommend it. As for the potters or the flameback, the potters are beautiful but tend to be more secretive and harder to get to eat. The opposite could be said for the flameback. They are bolder and tend to be aggressive to fish added after them. They also tend to be labeled as more reef-safe{although it is hit or miss when it comes to dwarf angels}. Well, thats all for now. Good Luck!!

here is a new list:

1x Blue Tang
1x Clown Tang
3x Mandarin fish
2x chalk bass
1x regal angel
5x Blue Reef Chromis (chromis cyaneus)
1x Sergeant Major
1x Moorish Idol (In the very long run!)
4x Squarespot anthias (1 male and 3 females)
2x Percula clowns
5x Firefish
1x Rainfords goby
1x Copperband

Plus all of your various shrimps and corals etc.

I would stay away from a Moorish Idol as they're very tough to keep and if you try you need to keep them with non-aggressive fish and a Clown tang and a Segeant Major are aggressive fish. Same goes here with the Regal Angel, you should probably look at one of the other angels. If you want a small Angel look at the Flame or Flameback or if your want a larger Angel like s Koran, Small Blue Face or Emperor.

You need to be careful with Damsel fish, Sergeant Major, as they get larger than those small little fish you see in your LFS and they can and do become bully of your tank.

I really like regals and have done ALOT of reading about them. If you got one before the more aggressive fish I think you would have a good chance of succeeding. I think one of the main factors is getting a healthy individual to start with. I'm not advertising for a site or anything, but marinecenter. com gets their fish eating before they ship them. Gregory Schiemer has {if I remember right} had two regal angels from this site and had good success. I know that it seems like every hard fish in your list is jumped on by everyone{including me}, but we are all just trying to help. But if you have done alot of studying, and know you can give the proper care then go ahead and try. When I was planning my first dream system a couple years back, I wanted to get every hard-to-keep fish. I knew their care requirements so why not give it a go. But having started my first saltwater, having a simple "bullet-proof" fish is all that I want to try. I think hard-to- keep fish are great, but don't overload yourself with them. Good Luck!

so, if i was to scrap the idol and the clown tang, wat fish would you guys recomend. i would really like to keep the regal angel on the list. most, if not, all of those 'hard-to-keep' fish won't be added until at least after the tank has fully cyled.

There is a huge list of fish to choose from that are very hardy and will do well in your tank. First plan out what you want you tank to be like fish wise and what is the fish that you want the most. From there you can then decide what would be good tank mates and choose from there. Like JeremyT said try and not pick all hard to keep fish as the chances that your going to be able to keep this fish alive is usually not good and will just lead to problems and fish dying.

u should not put anything in a tank thats not fully cycled.

with the fish your picking ur going on a 3-4 year plan to adding fish. if u want to keep the regal and idol i'd your tank is going to be pretty bare for awihle. just let it establish itself 2+ years then add one over let it acclimate over a year then add another. crazy but your picking special need fish. your mandarians i wouldn't add till 2 years into it either. why not try some other smaller fish . maybe a flame hawk royal gramma. seems like adding a few of these and taking away a few of the "special needs " fish would help.

i wanted to put in a royal gramma but they are rarely imported here and are a bit out of my price range ($150).
