2012 Olympics URS thread

Ryan Lochte beat Michael Phelps in the men's 400 IM final for USA's first gold medal. Lochte was born in Rochester, New York, to Steven Lochte and his Cuban-born wife, Ileana "Ike" Lochte. During his early childhood, his family lived in Canandaigua, New York, but they moved to Florida so his father could coach swimming. Lochte was taught to swim at the age of five by both of his parents.

Ryan was a third grader in my class when I did my student teaching at Bloomfield. Remind me to tell you my funny Ryan Lochte story the next time I see you. (The story is best served with a couple of beers.)

I thought this thread was going to be about how terrible the opening ceremonies were.

It was disjointed, a blender of ideas. Political. The kids part was creepy and the house "love story" was a train wreck. The Brits have so much pop culture and history and that was a mess. The Chinese were laughing at us.

the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing will be difficult to follow but this thread is dedicated to the athletes and the games... not the "half time" show.

Megan Musnicki is on the Womens 8 rowing team. She went to Naples and Canandaigua high schools. Neither school had a rowing team, but she excelled in basketball. She started rowing in her freshman or sophomore year in college (about 7 years ago).

Incidentally, thumbs down to Phelps for being a not-so-gracious nonwinner. I hesitate to call him a loser. He's anything but that. But his post race interview was abysmal. Part of being a great champion is being gracious. He certainly seemed shell shocked and disappointed, but never congratulated Ryan on a great race. I was surprised at his lack of polish in that instance.

It's always nice to see home town athletes do well on an international stage. Good luck to all of our athletes.

I bet your loving that big HDTV now Gary? I watched quite a few events on Sunday and was impressed with the quality of the video feeds.
