210 Tank Build

So we finally broke down and bought a brand new tank. Couldn't find a used one that we liked in our price range sooooooooooo...................

Here's the Stand I built on saturday evening minus doors, putty, and of course stain:

Here's the canopy (Sunday evening) 20" inside height for any kind of lighting!! Still need to cutout door panels and stain:

Will try to keep posting as I go, but I am moving this coming weekend and running out of time for everything. I need to have the tank stained, plumbed and ready to setup/fill on Monday!!!

I have the same tank. Let me know what you are planning for top glass (if any) to fit into recess. oceanic sells the kit for $70 each side with a hinged flap.

I am debating on what to do, if any. Since I will have a basement sump, I don't think I need it open for cooling.


Also, what are you planning for lights?

Don still has the tops that were sitting on the tank I bought (three sections) ......You could give him a call...

We usually never use tops as they impede the light for corals.

We have three 250 watt pendants but are looking to upgrade to 400 watts......Just looking for the right deal.

My tank, the techseries, has just two pannels. I too am looking for a good deal on 400w DIY fixtures. I am thinking 3 but would likely start with two and see how it looks.

Jon, I thought your other stand/canopy was beautiful, but this looks to be even better. Seriously, if you can knock that much out in a weekend, you need to be building custom stands for all of us who are either time or skill impaired. You could pay for this hobby easily!!!!!

Man that in a weekend..... Is the stand and canopy all plywood, it looks awesome. Are you going to use the lumenbright reflectors in your 20" canopy

Yes, It's all maple 3/4 ply and solid maple trim.
I got the door panels done (removeable for easy access) and all of the painting and sanding done.
Inside of stand and canopy are primed and painted gloss enamel for resistance to salt creep.

It's time to stain now..........Minwax Red Chestnut.

And here is the 120 contents that I get to move on Monday???

So the staining is done...........tomorrow night clear coat #1 out of 3.

Update:

As of now.......the stand and canopy are DONE!!!!! 3 coats of semi-gloss poly #0000 steel wool.

sump has 3 partitions glued in and soon the fourth.
Side Note: Don't wait until saturday at 12:00 to try and find someone to cut glass!!! AB glass Alameda/Federal.

I painted the tank back with 2 cans of Krylon gloss black. Tomorrow I will try to put together most of the plumbing..........
Thanks for the pump Dave.... and hopefully fill it up on Monday, move corals in monday night? tuesday. I plan on using atleast 60 gallons of my current tank water to help with new tank syndrome, but inevetibly will have some diatoms I'm sure.
I am putting 200lbs of aragonite, seeded with the live sand from my 120. Will also try to wire up the canopy tomorrow for all the lights.

By the way for all who are wondering.........I am into the stand and canopy $ 600. wood and stain only.

Tomorrow we get to start moving stuff!!!
Anybody want to come over and lift a tank with me???

I think I saw somewhere on here that Quarterbackkiller had 2 hammerhead pumps tha he was selling.

Really Nice... Good looking stand.
Are you planning on using a frame for your live rock?
If you do I found some masonry bits at Harbor Freight that
are around 16" long or so and I think they go up to 1" Dia.
It's only $20 for a set of 5-6 bits.
If I was starting over the one thing I would do is use a PVC or
Acrylic frame. Keep us up to date.

Jeremy thanks for the idea.......I thought about building a substructure for the rockwork but I just don't think I will have enough time to really think it out and build it.

Didn't do a thing to the tank today.........just moved a hundred boxes to the new house. If I get adventurous, I will try to take the stand/canopy over tonight.

Thanks....I'll check with marcus. I have one I can use for now in the sump but will be looking for something a little beefier and durable. I think I only need a dart for under the tank and if I plumb to the basement then a barracuda.

I was thinking originally of using a baracuda (actually two) for my basement tank room up to the 1st floor. About 16ft of head. Now I am thinking I should use a reeflow marlin pressure biased pump. apparently it spins at a higher rpm to with a different impeller, less flow, more pressure.

Anyone have experience using a baracuda through 1" bulkheads with this much head?
