Here are some pictures of the sump and plumbing. The sump is a 120 gallon glass tank. I added 1/4" glass baffles to divide the sump into different chambers. The skinny chamber on the left is for is the input to the sump. I also use it for probes and the heaters. There is a filter shock that is attached to the output of the main drain. The water then flows into the skimmer chamber. The skimmer is on a riser to so the skimmer sits in the right amount of water. From there it flows down the middle of the sump. Live rock sits on egg crate in the chamber. The water then flows around the corner to the return and surge pumps.

Look'n good goat585, is that 24 (twenty four) FW tanks in your sig?

Yes, I had that many running until I set this one up. You can see pictures of my old FW fishroom on my homepage. When I put in this tank I tore out most of the freshwater ones.

Thanks for the compliments

I always wanted to use a surge on one of my tanks and I finally was able to incorporate one on this tank. I used a 29 gallon tank that is divided into 2 chambers. This give me two 10 gallon surges. Here is a picture of the surge.

I used 1" spa flex to connect the surge to the display tank. A quiet one 4000 pump feeds the surges. I have individual ball valves on the return lines to the surge. I did this so I can control how often each surge fires. One surge take a minute to fill and the other one about 2 minutes. The surge last 45 seconds or so. Here are a couple of more pictures.

I vented the surge lines near the display to help with the bubbles. It seems to make a difference. I am thinking about adding another vent to each side to see what happens. Here is a pic.

The tank has a 30 breeder for refugium. I have put a small amount of cheato and some liverock to get it started. I have more rock that I need to move into it. It is lit by 2 36" T-5 6000K bulbs. Here are some pictures.

Finally to get this thread up to date. I filled the tank up and put in the base rock into the display. I am combining two tanks into this 1. The plan is to gradually move things over the next month or 2. I did not put in too much rock since a lot of the corals I have are attached to pretty good size pieces of live rock. Here are some photos.

Looks great Tom! I was out at your place a few years ago to buy some coral and was impressed with the fish room. Looks like you have made some big changes! The 240 looks awesome. I like the sump design and the surges!

I posted on another forum, but wanted to show my appreciation of impressive work. Love the dimensions of the tank and liked what you did with the stand.

Looks awesome so far, great job!

Will you be sticking with only the single LB pendent? I have a 48" x 36" footprint on a tank and was thinking of using something similar...

I am hoping to. I plan on keeping the corals and rock at least 6" away from the sides of the tank. I figure that I only need to light a 3'x3' area then. The tank looks bright enough. I plan on borrowing a friends PAR meter and seeing what I get in different spots. The light is sitting about 16" above the water surface. If I need a little more spread I will raise the light a little more and see what happens.

can i ask what the benafits of a surge?

The benefit of a surge is that it is an efficient way to create water movement. The water movement is more random than using the non controllable power head. It provides water movement that is similar to a wave crashing in on a reef.

I think it should work... I'll only be keeping a few SPS right below it and my "flowy" coral off ot the sides. I have plenty of NPS coral too, so if need be I'll just place them off to the side.

BTW, is that gorgeous queen in your avatar destined for the cube?

I wish. I lost the queen in a disease outbreak that took out all the fish except two in my 125. I had a real bad week. Lost $300-$400 in fish in a couple of days.
